The Bachelor of Music Education program, with vocal or instrumental focus, prepares students for teaching music in the public schools. The curriculum offers a practical, hands-on approach to the many facets of teaching music, i.e., primary and secondary instrument expertise, methodology courses, conducting, ensemble work and field experiences. A full semester of student teaching is required. Graduates of the program who pass the subject matter test receive State of Michigan certification for teaching in the public schools.
The curriculum in instrumental music education prepares students to teach instrumental and general music in grades K through 12.
The curriculum in vocal music education prepares students to teach vocal and general music in grades K through 12. Extensive coursework in piano and voice is required, as well as introductory classes on guitar and orchestral instruments.
Music education programs at Eastern Michigan University produce highly qualified teacher candidates. Modules within methodology courses allow students to experience music teaching first hand, prior to student teaching. During the professional semester, students are personally placed and supervised by Department of Music faculty, to ensure a successful capstone experience.
The program is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Both degrees provide the depth of knowledge and breadth of skill expertise that support the K-12 Music certification granted by the Michigan Department of Education.
