Overview: A Heritage of Excellence
Since 1854, over five generations of students and faculty have cultivated their musical careers at EMU, a pioneer in the field of music education. Your gift to the Department of Music and Dance benefits one of America's outstanding educational institutions. The department currently offers eleven degree programs enrolling over 350 undergraduate majors and minors and over 60 graduate students taught by 33 full time faculty members and 25 adjunct faculty and lecturers. Why your gift matters
We must greatly expand our endowed scholarship funds in order to attract and retain the best music students in the state and region. Michigan's public schools currently have unfilled openings for music teachers. Our students are highly recruited because of the strong educational and experiential foundation they receive at EMU. We offer both quality and value compared to other similar institutions. Many students have legitimate unmet financial needs and are unable to continue their studies due to a lack of well-deserved scholarships. We can increase retention and help meet the heightened market demand for music educators by expanding our scholarship funds.
Our current $1 million in endowed funds yields around $40,000 - $50,000 each year in interest that can be distributed as scholarships. Less than 60 students receive department scholarships each year. Nearly half of current funding is for first year students. Our urgent need is to offer at least $100,000 in annual scholarships. You can make a difference in the lives of future generations of young people with your generous gift toward one of our existing endowed scholarship funds.Back to top
Ways to give
You may contribute to any of the existing endowed scholarship funds. Donations are eligible for the State of Michigan Tax Credit.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss annual gifts, corporate matching gifts, planned gifts and bequests, gifts of appreciated securities, creating a named endowed scholarship fund, and gifts toward our capital campaign.
