*Music Theory Entrance Placement Examination: NEW STUDENTS >
All new students are required to take the Music Theory Placement Examination and receive
individual aural skills assessment prior to the first day of classes; the examination and individual
assessment are completed at the same session. No advance preparation for this exam is necessary.
*Music Theory Advanced Placement Examination: TRANSFER STUDENTS >
All transfer students are required to take the Music Theory Advanced Placement Examination and
receive individual aural skills assessment prior to the first day of classes; the examination and
individual assessment are completed at the same session. This examination is required of all transfer
students (even those who have successfully completed music theory courses at other institutions).
Students are advised to review music theory and aural skills materials they have previously studied
prior to taking the exam.
†Piano Placement Examination: ALL STUDENTS >
Every music major and minor must demonstrate a proficiency in piano before graduation as part of their chosen degree program. Students with limited or no previous keyboard experience may choose not to take the piano placement exam and will be assigned to a beginning piano class.
