Every student at EMU with instrumental music experience is invited and encouraged to continue performance in a University instrumental ensemble. The wind groups at EMU serve music majors, music minors, and non-music majors. Music majors are challenged in a musical climate that will prepare them musically for performance, public education, or other music-related pursuits. Non-music majors find performance groups to be compatible with their musical goals, while providing a congenial atmosphere that fosters lifetime relationships.

Wind Symphony
The Eastern Michigan University Wind Symphony is a select group of 60-70 highly skilled musicians who perform the finest in wind literature. Membership in the group is obtained by audition during the first week of classes in both the Fall and Winter Semester. The Wind Symphony continues a tradition of wind groups that have earned accolades from such distinguished composers as Karel Husa, Vincent Persichetti, Anthony Iannaccone, Dan Welcher and John Corigliano. Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band at Eastern Michigan University performs the best of traditional and contemporary literature for the collegiate concert band. Selected to provide a setting for participating students to improve their own musical understanding and appreciation, repertoire showcases the special strengths of participating students and, on occasion, invited soloists and composers. Membership in the group (of both music majors and non-music majors) is obtained by audition during the first week of classes in both the Fall and Winter Semester. Numbering just under 100, the Symphonic Band performs on campus several times during the school year and tours off campus during Winter Semester.

Marching Band
The EMU Marching Band has a long tradition of musical and entertainment excellence. The Marching Band performs for all home football games; participates in Homecoming, Band Night, and Family Day activities; performs exhibitions at area and national marching band festivals and competitions; and travels to one or two away games each year. Recent Marching Band seasons have also brought appearances at nationally televised Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions football games.
Membership is open to any student in the university by audition and field try-out at the annual pre-season Band Camp, held in August prior to the Fall Semester. In addition, Marching Band students who meet participation requirements can qualify for a university stipend.
The EMU Marching Band Color Guard also performs as an integral auxiliary unit of the band, with membership open by audition to any student at the university. Previous color guard experience is suggested. Auditions for membership in this colorful and talented unit are typically held during the month of May.

Jazz Ensemble
The EMU University Jazz Ensemble provides a rehearsal and performance setting dedicated to the study of creative jazz composition and improvisation, while reinforcing individual student technical and musical development. The Jazz Ensemble also provides an outlet, through the practical study of improvisation, for individual creativity, musical sensitivity, and originality. The Jazz Ensemble performs regularly throughout the school year at both on-campus concerts and occasional off-campus functions. Auditions for yearly membership are held the day before classes begin in the fall, and again in December for open positions.

Basketball Band
With a tradition of enthusiastic excellence, this all-volunteer organization provides spirited musical entertainment in support of the EMU men's and women's basketball teams, performing for regular home games and post-season tournament play, including the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Tournaments. Consisting primarily of non-music majors, members are selected by audition during the Fall Semester each year. Instrumentation is determined at the director's discretion and includes saxophones, brass, percussion, and electronic musical instruments. Providing yet another avenue of effective university musical participation, this ensemble stands on its own as a popular and viable performing organization.
Rehearsals for the Basketball Pep Band are held from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday beginning in November after marching season and continue through the end of the basketball season. In addition, all students who meet participation and performance requirements are eligible to receive a monetary stipend commensurate with the duties and performance responsibilities involved.
