Choral Ensembles
Chamber Choir
The repertoire of this ensemble is comprehensive, encompassing literature from the great choral masters of the Renaissance to the present. Folk songs and secular works are blended with both Christian and Hebraic sacred styles, complemented by works from the twentieth century and the music of Broadway. The Chamber Choir has had many honors, including two performances at the Midwest Music Educators Conference, two highly successful tours of the southern United States, a three week tour of Mexico which included performances with the Mexican National Symphony, a tour of the west coast of North America, and most recently, an extensive three week tour of Europe. The ensemble has also had the unique opportunity to work with noted American composers Samuel Adler, John Corigliano, Mark Wilberg, Anthony Iannaccone, Stephen Paulus, and Libby Larsen. This choir is open by audition to any student, regardless of major.
University Choir
The University Choir, a group of 60-80 musicians, performs major choral works of all periods (cantatas, oratorios, masses) and other works a cappella and with piano, orchestral, or instrumental accompaniment. The choir is open by audition to any student, regardless of major. Two or more major performances are presented in the Fall and Winter Terms.
Opera Workshop
The Opera Workshop at Eastern Michigan University offers students the opportunity to perform scenes from the major operatic repertory, chamber operas, and complete one-act operas. Emphasis is placed on the musical, technical, and dramatic aspects from different historical periods and styles. The purpose of this ensemble is to help the singer/actor develop a comfortable acquaintance with the stage, poise, interpretation, and the coordination of movement with musical motives. This course is open to all qualified students during the Fall semester with departmental permission. Instructor permission is also required, and auditions are held before the enrollment period for Winter semester, depending upon casting needs.
Women's Chorus
The Women's Chorus, a group of 30-50 women, is open to any female university student at Eastern Michigan University. The chorus performs repertoire from all major musical historical and is dedicated to the study and performance of a wide variety of choral literature for women's voices. From its re-formation in the 1991-92 season, the chorus has set a high standard of excellence in performance and as an academic class with emphasis placed on proper vocal production, development of music reading skills, and aesthetic awareness through the active study and performance of the choral literature. The Women's Chorus performs several Times, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif throughout the year, including appearances at the Festival of Lessons and Carols, and the Choral Festival Workshop.
