Carter Eggers has been the Professor of Trumpet at Eastern Michigan University since 1967. His Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota was followed by two years (1964-66) teaching instrumental music in the Iowa public schools. In 1967 he received the MM degree in trumpet performance from Ithaca College where he served as a graduate assistant and member of the Ithaca College Brass Quintet. He has done post-graduate work at the University of Michigan. His principal teachers have been Clifford P. Lillya, Frank Kaderabek, James Ode and Raymond T. DeVilbiss. He also studied briefly with Leonard B. Smith. Throughout his years at Eastern Michigan University he has been an active recitalist, soloist, adjudicator and clinician. He is an honorary member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. He has soloed at the Midwestern Conference in Ann Arbor twice with the Eastern Michigan University bands and also with the Dexter and Redford Thurston High School Bands. He has performed as soloist with bands and orchestras at Eastern under the direction of Vincent Persichetti, Karel Husa and Daniel Pinkham. As a performer on the natural trumpet, he has appeared with various early music ensembles in both the United States and Canada. In 1992 he was a presenter for International Seminar for Music Education in Korea where he also held master classes and served as a clinician, recitalist and soloist.

The Trumpet Studio at Eastern Michigan University averages 18-20+ trumpet majors. Most are undergraduate music education majors. Several are music performance or music therapy majors. Graduate students who study trumpet usually major in music education. They can perform to whatever extent they want and may participate in all the university ensembles including trumpet ensembles.

Performance in the trumpet studio is through solos and ensembles. Most students perform full senior recitals. Many trumpet students present junior and even sophomore half and full recitals even though these are not required. Music performance majors are required to perform full junior and full senior recitals. The EMU Trumpet Ensemble performs regular recitals including an annual spring concert in which alumni are invited to perform with the EMU students. The trumpet studio has its own annual publication, The Trumpet Studio Newsletter. You may obtain the latest edition by contacting Carter Eggers. The trumpet studio also has its own imprinted trumpet studio pencils. Come and visit us and receive a couple of them for your own music folder. The recently endowed EMU Trumpet Studio Scholarship will be awarded annually beginning with fall 2005. Many EMU trumpet students teach private students, coach and work with area bands and marching bands, which enables them to amass a considerable amount of teaching experience by the time of their graduation.
