    Professors of trombone and clarinet at Capital University perform at EMU. Alexander Recital Hall, 7 p.m.

    High School Vocal Solo and Ensemble Clinic

    The Choral and Voice faculty at EMU will host its second annual workshop for high school students participating in District Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Students receive an individual clinic with one of our esteemed faculty members. Contact: Trey Jacobs, Director of Choral Activities 734.487.0280. 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Alexander Music Building.

    Larisa Simington, guest piano recital

    Guest artist Larisa Simington will perform four piano sonatas by Scarlatti (C Major, D Minor, D major, and A Minor), Schubert’ s Sonata in A Minor, Prokoviev’s Sonata in C Major, and four selections by Franz Liszt. Larisa holds a doctorate in piano performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, New York. She received her master’s in music from the University of Toronto. Dr. Simington is currently on the faculty of Concordia University. Alexander Recital Hall, 8 p.m

    Parallel Passages

    57th annual faculty and guest artist choreography concert. Join EMU faculty and guest artists for an evening of dance featuring ballet, modern, jazz, contact improvisation, and musical theater performances by EMU dance majors and minors. Highlights include works by alum Erik Abbott-Main, guest artists Stefanie Cohen, Kathryn Contessa, and Holly Hobbs, and faculty Joanna McNamara, Julianne O’Brien Pedersen and Phil Simmons. Quirk Theatre. Three performances: Fri. at 8 p.m., Sat. at 8 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m. Admission: $10 general; $8 students. Tickets: 734.487.2282.

    Robert Satterlee, guest piano recital

    Pianist Robert Satterlee has developed a reputation as an accomplished and versatile solo recitalist and chamber musician. He plays regularly throughout the United States, delighting audiences with his incisive and imaginative performances. This evening’s performance includes Mozart’s Sonata in F Major, Riverwing by Tom Flaherty, Sonata in B Minor by Liszt, and three selections by Gabriel Faurée: Barcarolle No. 9, Nocturne No. 8, and Impromptu No. 5. Satterlee was appointed in the fall of 1998 to the piano faculty of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, having previously held teaching positions in Illinois, Missouri, California and Connecticut. He teaches at the Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer: Robert Satterlee, guest piano recital. Alexander Recital Hall, 8 p.m.

    High School Choral Invitational

    Invited area high school choirs will participate in a clinic experience with Dr. Anton Armstrong from St. Olaf College. 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. in Pease Auditorium.

    Wed. Jan. 28
    Eric Lamb, guest flute recital

    Belonging to a new generation of young international soloists, flutist Eric Lamb is making a name for himself as an artist who defies definition. He is a soloist, orchestral musician, passionate chamber musician and much sought after lecturer and teacher. Lamb is known for dynamic performances of works of the avant-garde and riveting interpretations of the classical and baroque repertoire. Eric holds degrees and diplomas from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, and the Sculoa di Musica di Fiesole. His teachers include Michel Debost, Thaddeus Watson and Chiara Tonelli. Alexander Recital Hall, 7 p.m.

    2009 Honors Band

    The area’s finest high school band students, selected by audition in November, culminate a weekend of intense rehearsals and workshops with a concert for parents and friends. Pease, 2 p.m.

    University Choir and Symphonic Band – “If Music Be the Food of Love”

    Trey Jacobs and John Zastoupil, Associate Director of Bands, share the stage in a celebration of music including selections by Hassler, Dickau, and Vaughan Williams. Pease Auditorium, 8 p.m.

    Sat. Feb. 7
    Symphony Orchestra

    Kevin Miller conducts the EMU Symphony Orchestra in Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Khachaturian, featuring concerto winner Jenny Wan as soloist, the Russlan and Ludmilla Overture by Glinka, and Symphony No. 6 by Tchaikovsky. Pease, 8 p.m.

    Tues. Feb. 10
    Organ faculty recital

    Scott Elsholz, Timothy Tikker and James Wagner collaborate in a varied program of works performed on the grand Frederick Alexander Memorial pipe organ. Pease, 7:30 p.m.

    Fri. Feb. 13
    Chamber Choir and Wind Symphony – “From Michigan and Beyond”

    Director of Bands Mary Schneider and Trey Jacobs lead this program featuring music of Michigan composers as well as world music. Pease Auditorium, 8 p.m.

    Jazz Ensemble

    Donald Babcock conducts the Jazz Ensemble in a program of New Music including works by students Chris Smith and Corey Mundale, and
    a work by faculty member Ryan Lewis. Quirk Theatre, 4 p.m.

    Percussion Ensemble

    John Dorsey directs the EMU Percussion Ensemble in a rhythmic extravaganze. Pease, 7:30 p.m.

    Faculty recital 8 p.m. – Pease
    The opening recital sets the stage for the festival with a variety of works by composers Whitney Prince, Samuel Barber, Arvo Pärt, Brian McCloskey and Anthony Iannaccone. Faculty and guest artists include Glenda Kirkland, soprano, Kimberly Cole-Luevano, clarinet, Julie Stone, flute, Carter Eggers, trumpet, Dawn Lindblade, clarinet; and pianists Garik Pedersen, Anne Beth Gajda and Larisa Simington.

    Thursday, Feb. 19

    Composer convocation and welcome 11 a.m. – Pease
    EMU welcomes William Bolcom, featured composer, to Music Now Fest ’09. Mr. Bolcom will discuss and play excerpts from his works.

    Open orchestra rehearsal 1 p.m. – Pease
    Open rehearsal of Commedia with William Bolcom and the Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kevin Miller.

    Open choir rehearsal 3 p.m. – Pease
    Open rehearsal with the University Choir of Bolcom’s Maha Sonnet, Chorale on St. Anne’s Hymn, and The Rhodora, directed by Trey Jacobs.

    Chamber music of William Bolcom 8 p.m. – Pease
    This concert features chamber music of William Bolcom, including Five Fold Five, First Piano Quartet, Three Ghost Rags, Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano, Virtuosity Rag, and Gospel Preludes. Participants include faculty and guest artists Daniel Foster, Robert Reed, David M. Pierce, Julie Stone, Garik Pedersen, Kristy Meretta, Kathryn Goodson, Larisa Simington, Kimberly Cole-Luevano, James Wagner, Denise Root-Pierce, Donald Babcock, Carter Eggers, Matthew Hansen, Thomas Carter, and T. J. Perry.

    Friday, Feb. 20

    Open band rehearsal 11 a.m. – Pease
    Open rehearsal of Song and “Machine” from Symphony No. 5 with William Bolcom and the Wind Symphony, directed by Mary Schneider.

    Meet the composer 2 p.m. – Alexander Recital Hall
    William Bolcom participates in a conversational exchange with a composer’s panel and audience members about the compositional process and issues related to contemporary music.

    Open band rehearsal 4 p.m. – Pease
    Open rehearsal of Augusta Reed Thomas’ Magneticfireflies with the Symphony Band, directed by John Zastoupil.

    Festival finale 8 p.m. – Pease
    Music Now Fest ’09 concludes with a concert of contemporary music presented by the EMU Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, University Choir, Chamber Choir, and Percussion Ensemble. Selections by William Bolcom include Commedia, Song, and “Machine” from Symphony No. 5. Admission: $8 adults, $4 students and seniors, available at the door.     Ian Hominick, guest piano recital

    Professor of Piano at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Hominick holds degrees from Ohio State Univer¬sity and Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Alexander Recital Hall, 8 p.m.

    Trumpet ensembles

    In their eighth annual collaboration, EMU trumpet students and alumni led by Carter Eggers present music for trumpet ensembles. Pease, 3 p.m.

    Garik Pedersen, piano

    Garik Pedersen celebrates 20 years of teaching at EMU and the honor of being named a Steinway Artist in October, 2008. This benefit recital will help raise funds for a practice room Steinway grand piano in recognition of Dr. Pedersen’s significant contribution to music at EMU. Pease, 4 p.m.

    Low brass fest

    Trombone, euphonium and tuba from the studios of Donald Babcock and Matthew Tropman present a low brass chamber and large group ensemble concert. Pease, 8 p.m.

    Symphony Orchestra

    The 2008-09 concerto competition winners perform with EMU Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kevin Miller. T.J. Perry, trumpet and Brad Faryniarz, saxophone, perform Rivier’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Trumpet. Julia Roth, soprano, performs the “Mad Scene” from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti. The orchestra also will play Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Pease, 8 p.m.

    Senior dance projects

    Senior dance students present their final projects in this concert culminating their degree program. Pease, 4 p.m.

    Percussion and African ensembles

    John Dorsey and Kofi Ameyaw lead the Percussion Ensemble and African Ensemble in a diverse rhythmic program showcasing multi-ethnic percussion instruments and repertoire. Mr. Ameyaw, a native of Ghana, has performed the gyil and other West African percussion instruments at major venues throughout the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. Pease, 7:30 p.m.
