Fall 2006 Lab Worker Schedule (pdf) >
Alexander Computer Lab Worker Policies
1. It is imperative that you arrive for work on time. You are required to arrive for work five minutes before the top of the hour, and should remain until 55 minutes after the hour. For example, if your name appears on the worker schedule for the 9:00 hour, you will work from 8:55 until 9:55.
2. If you are unable to work, or if you are going to be late, you are required to call Maria Ross in the Main Music & Dance Office prior to the beginning of your work time to notify her of your situation (phone: 734.487.4380). If Ms. Ross is unavailable, ask for Marsha Bolden and give her the information. Then, send Marilyn Saker an e-mail message letting her know about your absence (msaker@emich.edu).
3. If you know in advance that you have a conflict with your work time, you should make arrangements with one of the other lab workers from your department to switch hours with you, or to substitute for you. Be sure to let Marilyn Saker know if you switch times or plan to have someone sub for you.
4. Your primary purpose as a worker in the Alexander Computer Lab is to assist students using the lab and to monitor lab activities. Workers are required to greet students, introduce themselves as the worker, and offer assistance. Workers are also responsible for notifying Marilyn Saker and the Main Music & Dance Office staff of lab problems.
5. Please ask all individuals entering the lab to show you their EMU ID and fill out the information on the Alexander Computer Lab Sign In and Sign Out Information page. If they do not have an ID, ask them to leave the lab. Note that the sign in/out page has a column for the computer number (all of the computers are numbered on the front of the machine). Be sure to tell students which computer they should use, and be sure this information is documented on the sign in/out page. The Department is required to keep records of who is working on which computer at what date and time.
6. The desk in the front of the room is the student worker's home base. Workers are required to spend the majority of their time at this desk so that they can greet students and offer assistance. You should not spend your lab work time at the computers. You may check your e-mail when you arrive for work to see if there are any lab-related messages, but after that you should spend your time mostly at the worker's desk. Feel free to read or do homework while at the worker's desk if the lab is not busy. If no one is in the lab, please tidy up the room. Computer cleaning supplies are stored in the lower right-side drawer of the desk.
7. It is extremely important that you never leave the lab unattended. If the next scheduled worker does not show up to relieve you, tell the students in the lab to leave, and lock the gates. When you have a chance, send Marilyn Saker an e-mail letting her know that your replacement did not show up on time.
8. Each student may print ten (10) pages per day in the lab. Require all students using the printer to complete the information page on the clipboard at the worker's desk.
9. Workers may be asked by music students to check out materials and/or instruments. The checkout pages are in the top right-side drawer of the worker's desk. Please note that one clipboard is for Books and Materials , the other is for Instruments. Be sure to ask the student to show you their ID and their course syllabus, and initial the appropriate checkout page.
10. Periodically, EMU Instructors will hold their class meetings in the lab. Marilyn Saker will notify you by e-mail when these class visits are scheduled. If a class is scheduled during one of your work hours, post one of the Class In Session signs stored in the desk, check EMU IDs as usual, and ask each student entering the room if they are in the class. If they are not, ask them to leave.
11. Do not accept reservations for the computer lab. Faculty members hoping to reserve the lab are required to contact Marilyn Saker directly via e-mail.
12. If students mention that there is a problem with a computer, please have them fill out a Computer Error Report Form. Once they have done so, please send Marilyn Saker an e-mail message summarizing the information on the form. Finally, attach the completed form to the appropriate clipboard on the worker's desk.
13. The Alexander Computer Lab is intended for study and research. The lab's atmosphere should be similar to a library. It is not intended to be a lounge or entertainment room. Students are not allowed to loiter or engage in non-study activities in the lab. Students are not allowed to eat, drink, or smoke in the lab. Please note that, because students are not allowed to eat, drink, or smoke in the lab, you cannot eat, drink, or smoke in the lab either.
14. Eventually the lab supplies will run low. Paper for the computer printer may be obtained from the Main Music & Dance Office. If you notice that the Sign In and Sign Out, Computer Error Report, or Printer Copies sheets are running low, please send Marilyn Saker an e-mail letting her know.
15. If you have any questions or if any problems arise, please contact Marilyn Saker (phone: 734.487.1284; e-mail: msaker@emich.edu).
