Music Therapy

Professor McGuire in the Music Therapy Center, which opened in 2006.
What is music therapy?
Music therapy is the use of music to accomplish therapeutic aims: the restoration, maintenance and improvement of mental and physical health. It is the systematic application of music in a clinical environment, directed by a music therapist, to bring about desired behavioral changes. Individuals undergoing treatment experience a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them and achieve a more appropriate adjustment to society.
Music therapists establish therapeutic relationships with people of all ages with a variety of needs. There are no substitutes for a genuine interest in people and a desire to help them. For a music therapist, patience, flexibility, tact, understanding, good health, and a sense of humor are indispensable, as are well-developed music skills.
