2010-11 Competition Winners

 

Chamber Music Competition

Congratulations to the Recycle Trio, Suet Yee Shirley Lam, Jacqueline Pennington and Brian Young, for winning the Chamber Music Competition on Saturday, March 19, 2011. They performed "Transformation to Transcendence" by B. Roberson. They will perform this work again at the "Bravo: A Celebration of Excellence" recital on Monday, March 26, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the Student Center Auditorium.

Thanks to our distinguised panel of judges: Harry and Elaine Sargous and Joseph Gurt . They have extended their compliments to all of the students who competed and to the faculty who coached them in their outstanding performances.

 

Graduate Competition

Congratulations to pianist Wei Zhang, who was the winner of the Graduate Performance Competition held in Pease Auditorium last Friday, February 4. She performed the first movement of Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata.

Barry Manilow Competition

The three names submitted by the judges for the Manilow Competition held on January 28, 2011 are as follows, in ranked order:

Jessica Peltz, flute
Nicole Harris, flute
Matthew Konopacki, baritone

 

Concerto and Aria Competition

Congratulations to this year's winners in the Concerto and Aria Competition, held on Nov. 14, 2010:

  • Emily White, oboe, who will perform the Marcello Oboe Concerto in C minor
  • Brian Young, percussion, who will perform his own original composition: Near Symmetry, A Concertino for Marimba

An honorable mention was given to Teresa Davis, soprano.

Emily and Brian will perform with the Orchestra on its two concerts during the Winter semester. Teresa will perform in the event that one of the winners is unable to perform.

Bravo to all of the contestants, accompanists and applied faculty for an outstanding competition. As one of our colleagues said: "This is a proud day for EMU."

N.A.T.S. Auditions

EMU voice students competed with nearly 250 singers in the 2010 N.A.T.S. (National Associaiton of Teachers of Singing) Student Auditions at Grand Valley State University on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Our students did a wonderful job irepresenting EMU both professionally and musically. Those students who deserve special notice are:

  • Renae Murphy-Third place in 2nd year College Women
  • Victoria Gentry-Third place in Advanced Women
  • Nataline Clyne-Honorable Mention in Advanced Women

EMU will host the 2011 N.A.T.S. auditions.

 

William Stewart Competition

Congratulations to the following students who were unanimously selected by our distinguished panel of adjudicators as winners of this year's William Stewart Concerto Competition, held on November 8, 2010. Winners will perform during the Winter semester with one of the concert bands.

  • Eric Baker, clarinet, who will perform a movement of the Carl Maria von Weber Concerto
  • Jessica Peltz, flute, who will perform Georges Hue's Fantasie

Congratulations to all those who participated, and many thanks to our wind and percussion applied faculty for their efforts on behalf of these students. Our gratitude is also extended to our panel of adjudicators: Dr. Rodney Dorsey (University of Michigan), Dr. Greg Cunningham (Oakland University/Warren Symphony), and Nathaniel Lampman (Saline High School).
