Music Therapy Students Receive Honors

Bernadette Allegood Skodack, a senior from Ann Arbor, MI has received the $1,500 Music Therapy Scholarship from Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) Philanthropies, Inc. Michelle Gaddis Kennemer, MT-BC, Music Therapy Project Director, SAI Philanthropies, wrote in a letter to Skodack, “You should feel especially proud that you stand out among your peers as someone who will certainly be an exceptional music therapist.” Skodack will use the award to help defray the costs of her 900 hours of music therapy clinical training that will begin in September at the Lincoln Park (MI) Schools.

 

 

SawyerAmy Sawyer, of Findlay, OH and also an EMU senior, will present at the annual conference of the American Music Therapy Association to be held in San Diego, CA, November 13-15, 2009. The presentation that was accepted through a blind review process is entitled Infusing Technology into Music Therapy Student Experiential Learning. Sawyer, in conjunction with Professor Michael G. McGuire, Coordinator of the EMU Music Therapy Program, will provide information from an undergraduate student’s perspective about technologically-based assignments. Demonstrated will be music therapy work that is submitted electronically, as well as in audio and video format, a database Sawyer completed that organizes all content from EMU’s music therapy courses, and the display of a web site designed by Sawyer as part of a professional skills course taught by McGuire during Winter 2008. Sawyer was also honored during the 2008-2009 academic year by being granted the $500 Music Therapy Award from the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs.
