Flute Study at EMU

Private flute instruction with Dr. Julie Stone, Professor of Flute.
All flute majors (including Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy, and BA or BS) receive a weekly 1-hour private lesson. In addition to a private lesson, flute students meet weekly for Flute Studio Class where students learn orchestral excerpts, discuss flute-related topics, and perform for other member of the flute studio.

Perform with the active EMU Flute Choir and Flute Ensembles.
The Flute Choir was selected to perform at the National Flute Association Convention in 2000 where it premiered a piece by highly- acclaimed composer Christopher Caliendo. The Flute Choir presents concerts each semester on campus and performs a wide array of music from medieval to contemporary to jazz.

EMU Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Collegium Musicum (available through audition).
In these ensembles, undergraduate as well as graduate students have the opportunity to perform challenging repertoire.

Performing and competition opportunities.
EMU William Stewart Competition, the Manilow Performance Competition, the Kappa Kappa Psi Honors Recital, the Tau Beta Sigma Chamber Music Recital, and Tuesday Student Recitals.

Chamber music.
In addition to Flute Ensembles, many flutists perform in woodwind quintets, flute and guitar duets, flute and harp duets, and other chamber music with strings, winds, and percussion. These groups are frequently coached by the Eastern Winds (EMU faculty wind quintet) and other EMU faculty.

Hear world-famous musicians and master classes at EMU and surrounding areas such as Detroit, Toledo, and the University of Michigan Musical Society.
Recent activities include a James Galway concert, Detroit Symphony Concerts, and master classes with English flutist William Bennett.

EMU Faculty Performances.
The Eastern Winds and other faculty artists present solo and chamber music concerts throughout the year.

Exposure to other flutists.
Dr. Stone regularly invites guest artists to campus for recitals, lectures, and master classes.  Guests have included Christina Jennings, Concert Artists Guild Winner and Professor of Flute at the University of Colorado, Marianne Gedigian, Professor of Flute at the University of Texas at Austin, Rhonda Larson, international recording artist, Wendy Mehne, Professor of Flute at Ithaca College, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson, Phil Dikeman and Jeff Zook of the Detroit Symphony.

Regina Nicholas--National Scholarship Competition Winner, National Association of Negro Musicians
Kristine Reaume—College Band Directors National Association Band; masters degree scholarship student at the University of Texas at Austin

Proximity to Detroit Civic Orchestra.
Students are encouraged to audition for Detroit Civic Orchestra.

Music Now Festival.
This biennial festival celebrating new music brings a major composer to EMU for a 3-day residency. Guests include Libby Larsen, John Corigliano, Joan Tower, and Peter Schickele.

EMU Undergraduate Honors Symposium.
Undergraduates compete to represent the Department of Music at the University-wide symposium held each March.

EMU Honors Program.
Students may participate in the advanced course offerings of the Honors Program and can even create contracts with the program to present recitals for credit.

Most classes are taught by faculty rather than graduate teaching assistants.
At Eastern Michigan University opportunities abound for a solid education. Numerous
performance opportunities and quality instruction combine to form a well-rounded
education in preparation for graduate school, music education, music therapy,
music business, or other careers in music!
