Oboe Studio
Eastern Michigan University has an excellent program of study for oboists, designed to assist you in preparing for a career in world of music. Whether your intention is to become a professional performer, certified music educator, or manager of a private teaching studio or music-related business, your oboe courses develop the musical skills, artistry, and knowledge base you need to achieve your academic and musical potential and to become employable after graduation.
In private and group studies, we integrate elements of pedagogy, philosophy, educational psychology, music history, music-theory, the business of music, reed-making and instrument care with other aspects of music relevant to your chosen career. In addition, we encourage you to declare your musical independence as you gradually become your own best teacher, best critic, best problem-solver, and most loyal fan.
In the Department of Music and Dance, oboe majors receive a 1-hour private lesson each week; music minors may take ½ hour of weekly instruction. These lessons in applied music provide structure and motivation to the work you carry on in the practice room throughout the week. Reed-making and studio classes are offered weekly. These, along with extra performance opportunities and periodic events of special interest to oboists round out the applied music experience. Oboe events might include faculty and guest recitals, music competitions, clinics/masterclasses, even celebrations, lunches, dinners, or get-togethers that are just plain fun.
Performance experiences in the Department of Music and Dance are rich and varied. Students may perform in an assortment of university ensembles including the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, or Basketball Band. All ensembles are open by audition to any university student. Oboe students also have many solo and chamber music performance opportunities in studio classes, departmental recitals and programs.
Experience has shown that students willing to practice with commitment and remain organized, focused and positive in the face of everyday distractions or disappointments discover the down-deep satisfaction that comes with sustained musical accomplishment. If you are able to visualize and work for your success and maintain a positive attitude in the process, you will be successful in the oboe studio - and in life. That is my personal goal for each one of you.
Sincerely,
Professor Kristy Meretta
