Biography

Kathy King is the Founder and Artistic Director of Michigan Dance Project, a not-for-profit professional contemporary dance company touring Southeast Michigan since 2006. Through working with MDP, King has established and directed the Brighton Dance Festival, Get Up & MOVE! Choreographers' Showcases, and the Jumping Through the Lens photography & dance exhibit. She is currently an adjunct lecturer and guest artist in the Department of Music & Dance at Eastern Michigan University, teaching modern and jazz. She is also the assistant artistic director at Michelle's Academy of Dance & Performing Arts Center in Brighton, MI, and on faculty with Artists-in-Training Dance Convention and Dance Rogue Intensive Workshops, touring the U.S. and Canada. In 2003, King moved to L.A. where she was assistant to choreographers Robert Schultz, Joaquin Escamilla, and Nichelle Bane, while also performing in many stage and film works.

Upon return from L.A., King attended Wayne State University as a talent scholar in the Maggie Allesee Department of Dance, and was a performer in both the WSU Dance CompanyONE and WSU Dance Workshop. Eventually she changed her studies to Public Relations, which sparked a passion for event and promotional management. Other professional training includes EDGE Performing Arts Center, Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio, Broadway Dance Center, Rocky Mountain Ballet Theatre and the Bates Dance Festival.  King has taught at the American College Dance Festival, Rhythm Plus Dance Company (Hamilton, Ontario), Dance Odyssey Competitions, Fusion Dance Studio (Torrance, CA), University of Michigan Dance Team, and many other studios and schools nationwide. In addition to teaching, King has served as an adjudicator for Dance Masters of America, Dance Odyssey Competitions, and the Flint Youth Ballet.
