Minutes of Meeting - Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 111 Welch Hall

Present:  John Dugger - Chair, Jeff Armstrong, Kim Berrington, Liz Broughton, Amelia Chan, Ron Delph, John Novak and Jim Pignataro


1.   Agenda for Wednesday, March 13, 2002 meeting

-         Action:  Approved  

2.   Review of minutes from Wednesday, February 27, 2002 meeting

-         Action:  Approved

  1. Discussed strategies for obtaining perceptions and feedback from the EMU Community
    1. April 8th Open Forum; Time: 12PM; Location: McKenny Union Main Lounge
    Forum will include: handouts, overheads, questionnaire and round table discussion with punch and cookies (Vick's budget).
Forum topics will include: academic services, resources and graduation rates for student-athletes as well as perceptions of student-athletes on campus.
    Action: Dugger and Findley will make the public aware of Open Forum via the Eastern Echo, EMU Today and posting filers.  Pignataro will post the information via the Athletics Department 12th Man list serve.

    Action: Delph will develop a questionnaire for Open Forum participates to complete. 

    Action: Subcommittee is required to submit, via email, two questions to Delph for the questionnaire by Monday, April 18, 2002.
    1. Faculty Council Presentation;

o       Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2002; Time: 3:00 PM; Location: Upstairs McKenny Union

o       Diles and Dugger will present Academic Integrity Subcommittee role in NCAA Certification process

    1. Student-Athlete Session

o       Action:  Pignataro will identify 6-8 student-athletes to participate in April 3, 2002 A.I. meeting

o       Action:  Subcommittee agreed to develop student-athlete questionnaire at a later date

  1. Reviewed status of assignments

    -         Action:  The following subcommittee members reported on the assigned research:  Broughton, Armstrong, Chan, Dugger, Berrrington, Delph and Novak.

5.  Other

-         Broughton mentioned that Mira emphasized the Subcommittee should be prepared to respond to the NCAA Visiting Team questions on Student-Athlete Exit Interviews and the appointed Athletics Department governing body to review the academic integrity of the Athletics Department.
