NCAA Steering Committee Minutes

April 18, 2002

11:00 a.m. - 111 Welch Hall

Members present:  Jeff Armstrong, Bob Brackenbury, Dave Diles, Whitney Harris, Carole Huston, Bob Okopny, Melody Reifel, Kathy Tinney, Jim Vick

Peer Reviewers:

Jim Vick distributed a list of potential peer reviewers for the NCAA Certification peer review visit in spring 2003.  Each steering committee member should review the list and indicate whether there are any individuals on the list who should be eliminated due to a conflict of interest.  Committee members should return the list to Jim by Tuesday, April 23.  Jim Vick will submit the list to Mira Colman and a final list of peer reviewers will be selected.

Committee Reports:

·         Equity, Welfare & Sportsmanship – Whitney Harris:   The self-study plan that was originally sent to Mira Colman contained two errors on Page 7, Section 3,

Items "a" and "c".  Corrections have been made and  mailed to Colman at the NCAA.  The revised self-study plan will be sent to all Steering Committee members;  the revised plan will also be posted on the website.

·         Fiscal Integrity – Bob Brackenbury:  Bob reported he is resigning his position as the Chair of the Fiscal Integrity Subcommittee due to his leaving the university.  Jim Vick will work with President Kirkpatrick to appoint a new chair of this subcommittee.

·         John Dugger from Academic Integrity and Karen Simpkins from Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance were unable to attend the meeting but both reported to Jim Vick prior to the meeting that everything was progressing according to plan.

Issues/Problems:

·         It was agreed that the purpose of the first Public Forum meeting scheduled for each subcommittee is to receive input from the public.

·         A robust discussion took place about the article that appeared in the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report regarding the poor gender equity standing of Eastern Michigan University athletics.  It was noted that the report used data from two years ago and since that time, EMU has made very substantial progress.  The self study gives the Equity, Welfare & Sportsmanship Subcommittee an excellent opportunity to study gender equity assessment issues.
