NCAA Certification Steering Committee Minutes

July 24, 2002 – 11:30 a.m.

Members present: Jeff Armstrong, Ken Bruchanski, Dave Diles, John Dugger, Whitney Harris, Bob Okopny, Melody Reifel, Karen Simpkins, Kathy Tinney, Jim Vick

Committee Reports:

• Karen Simpkins distributed the first rough draft for the Governance & Commitment to Rules Compliance Subcommittee for review by members of the Steering Committee.
• Whitney Harris distributed copies of the “Equity Plan 1996-2001” for review by members of the Steering Committee.
• John Dugger distributed the latest rough draft of the Academic Integrity self study. The Steering Committee reviewed the document during the meeting.

Issues/Problems:

• Reifel suggested that the Subcommittee Chairs should meet with student-athletes to explain the NCAA Certification process and give an overview of each of the four areas that are being reviewed in the self-study.

Action items:

• Melody Reifel will provide Jim Vick a schedule of individual team meetings so that members of the Steering Committee can coordinate times to speak to each team about the NCAA Certification process and its current status.
• John Dugger will send (electronically) the revised rough draft of the Academic Integrity report to members of the Steering Committee prior to August 15. Steering Committee members should review the report and bring a copy to the August 15 meeting.
• Steering Committee members should review the Governance & Commitment to Rules Compliance report and the Equity Plan 1996-2001 prior to the August 15 meeting.
