certification process. Her presentation included a historical overview as well
as a discussion about the objectives and benefits of the program. Other highlights of her presentation
included the following:
- When
the Athletics Certification program was first approved in 1993, it was a
5-year cycle; the second cycle began in 1999 and was been changed to a
10-year cycle.
- EMU’s
next athletics certification will occur in approximately 10 years;
however, an interim report will be due five years following the 2003
peer-review visit.
- The
certification process is based on a total of 13 Operating Principles,
which are designed to level the playing field in intercollegiate
athletics.
- Tough
sanctions will be administered to institutions that fail to conduct a
comprehensive self-study or fail to correct problems.
- Two
weeks have been flagged as possible dates for the Peer-Review visit: The first choice is the week of May 12,
2003; the second choice is June 9, 2003.
A final decision will be made and communicated to Jim Vick.
- Peer
Reviewers generally arrive on a Sunday with interviews conducted on Monday
and Tuesday. Wednesday is the date
reserved for the exit interview with the President.
