NCAA Steering Committee Minutes

September 5, 2002

11:30 – 1:30 Welch Hall

Members present: Dave Diles, Carole Huston, Ken Bruchanski, Whitney Harris, John Dugger, Kathy Tinney, Sandra Williams, Jim Vick, Melody Reifel, Jeff Armstrong, Sally McCracken

Issues/Problems:

Whitney Harris announced that the subcommittee on Equity, Welfare & Sportsmanship will hold a public forum on September 23 at 4:00 in King Hall.
John Dugger announced that the Academic Integrity subcommittee will hold a public forum on October 3, 12:30 – 2:00 at McKenny Union.
Karen Simpkins announced that the Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance will hold an open forum on September 9, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. at the McKenny Union.
Sandra Williams announced that the Fiscal Integrity Subcommittee will hold a public forum on October 11. A time and location will be announced at a later date.

Report review:

The steering committee members reviewed a portion of the Fiscal Integrity report (draft #3) and suggestions were made for improvement. The committee will finish reviewing the draft at the next meeting.

Action Items:

Melody Reifel will contact Jim Vick and John Dugger with information regarding using a .PDF format to post reports to the web site.
Jim Vick will send letters (near the end of the winter term) to all the student-athletes reminding them about the self-study peer review process. Although Steering Committee members have been meeting with the teams to explain this process, a follow-up letter will reinforce this information to our student athletes.
Dave Diles will arrange to get student-athletes’ addresses to Jim Vick.
Whitney Harris will distribute copies of the Equity, Welfare & Sportsmanship report to Steering Committee members during the week of September 9.
