YPSILANTI – The Eastern Michigan University Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is announcing the formation of its sixth Student Funders Group. In forming the group, these students will be able to gain experience in the grant process.
Ten students, all members of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, will be awarding grants totaling $5,000 to one or more community nonprofits. This allows students to get a taste for working in the nonprofit field by being on the granting side of the process.
The Student Funders Group takes that preparation one step farther. The students first do research to understand the needs of the community, which geographical area has the highest needs addressed by nonprofits, then write a request for proposals (RFP).
After receiving the RFP, the organizations will have a chance to apply for a grant offered by the organization. After the deadline passes, the group will evaluate the proposals received to determine which best meet the purpose of the request and award the finalist(s) a grant to pursue their proposed activities.
“It’s a really outstanding way for students to learn about the grantmaking process as well as the community they live in,” said Lora Stevens, NLA Graduate Assistant. “Grants are a huge aspect of nonprofit and philanthropy organizations, and this opportunity gives students a hands-on experience that will help them in their future careers.”
Over the last five years, the Student Funders Group has provided 29 grants totaling more than $25,000. During this time, the group has received the funding for its grants from numerous donors, including EMU Student Government, the Women in Philanthropy Group and the NLA program.
The organization will be sending out its request for proposal on February 1, and will be accepting proposals until March 1. The organization plans to award the grant(s) by the end of April.
