Professional Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Certification Program

As part of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, Eastern Michigan University offers a series of non-credit courses designed to help nonprofit professionals achieve nationally recognized Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. Participation in the CNP program can provide you with the tools to achieve success in the field of nonprofit leadership and management.

While this certification is typically achieved while pursuing a bachelor's, master's or graduate certification degree, Eastern is the only university approved to offer a path to this certification outside of the pursuit of a degree.

The courses developed for this program are taught as a mix of classroom and online learning and follow the guidelines of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Program's 10 professional competencies:

  • Communication, marketing and public relations
  • Cultural competency and diversity
  • Financial resource development and management
  • Foundations and management of the nonprofit sector governance
  • Future of the nonprofit sector
  • Leadership and advocacy
  • Legal and ethical decision-making
  • Personal and professional development
  • Program development
  • Volunteer and human resource management

The national Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) certification can be earned with the completion of these eight training courses and:

  • Attendance at a national conference on a nonprofit topic, such as the MNA Conference
  • Attainment of significant experience in the nonprofit sector, or completion of a 300 hour internship
