No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) is a state program for accelerating the transition of workers into well-paid jobs by providing up to two years worth of tuition (not to exceed $5,000 per year) at any community college, university, or other approved training provider to gain the skills and credentials for new careers in high-demand occupations, emerging industries, or to start a business. The program functions through Michigan Works! Agencies, who oversee service providers selected through a competitive bidding process to best meet the workforce needs of their local area. Individuals may qualify for No Worker Left Behind if they are unemployed, have received a termination or layoff notice, or are employed with a family income is less than $40,000 per year. However, only a local Michigan Works! Agency can determine eligibility.
Program Type
Most programs approved for No Worker Left Behind are bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees, or occupational certificates. However, master’s programs may be approved if they meet all core criteria, i.e. - two years or less needed; will lead to job in high demand, emerging sector, or entrepreneurial endeavor.
Program Approval
If you would like to get a program approved for No Worker Left Behind, contact Christine Deacons at aa_nwlb@emich.edu and ask that the major be submitted for approval. It could take up to twenty business days for a program to move through the approval process.
Program Maintenance and Referral
The list of programs that have been approved for No Worker Left Behind can be viewed here. If a student is interested in a program in your department, direct them to contact their local Michigan Works! Agency to determine their eligibility for No Worker Left Behind. If they have already been approved for No Worker Left Behind, refer them to the Office of Admissions to begin the process of applying to the University.
