On-Campus Employment
What is considered on-campus employment?

Both F-1 and J-1 students may engage in on-campus employment at EMU. To be eligible you must be:
• be 'In-status'
• be pursuing a full-time course of study
• be in good academic standing
• Not have reached your program end date
• F-1 students must get the permission of OIS
• J-1 students must get the permission of their responsible officer and OIS

Once employment is authorized, you must maintain your eligibility or you will lose your right to continue working.

Below are the jobs which qualify as "On-Campus Employment":

1. Employment by EMU
On-campus work for which you receive a paycheck (or other compensation) from EMU, is usually acceptable, whether it is employment in the library, the computer lab or the housing office. Work required by a scholarship, fellowship or assistantship is also acceptable.

2. Other Employment on EMU's Premises
This includes work on EMU's campus for an outside contractor, if this work provides direct services to students; the bookstore and franchised food outlets may qualify here. Please check with an OIS advisor if you plan to work for an on-campus contractor.

3. Work Off Campus Which Qualifies as On-Campus Employment
Immigration regulations allow you to work at an off-campus location provided (1) the location is educationally affiliated with EMU, (2) the educational affiliation is associated with EMU's established curriculum or is related to a graduate level research project which EMU has contracted to perform, and (3) the work is an integral or important part of your graduate level program of study. For example, if your field of study is marine biology and your school has an off-campus (legally affiliated) marine biology research facility, you may work there and that employment will be defined as "on campus".

If you are unsure whether a job qualifies as "on-campus", please consult with an OIS advisor before starting work.

What do I need to do after I find a job?

Your next steps after you find a job depend on whether you have a Social Security Number (SSN).

If you do not have a SSN:

  • Ask your employmer to complete the Employer Authorization Form 10-1304, print it on their departmental letterhead, and sign the form.
  • Bring the Employer Authorization Form to the OIS with your passport and complete an I-9 (Employment Eligibility form) during your visit.
  • If you are a J-1 student, you will also need to complete the On-Campus Work Authorization form. Your program sponsor will need to approve and sign the form.
  • Take the completed, OIS-signed I-9 form to your employer (general student employment to Career Services in McKenny Hall, Graduate Assistants to Boone Hall, and independent vendors directly to your place of employment)
  • Take a completed Social Security Application, along with your passport, I-20s, I-94 card, and signed employment form, to a Social Security Administration office. The nearest one to EMU is at: 3971 Research Park Dr. Ann Arbor, MI 48108 Open from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Make sure that you get a receipt from the Social Security Officer at the time of your visit. Upon receipt of your card, sign it and give a copy to your employer (same location as where you took the completed I-9 form).
  • Make an appointment with the Payroll department (104 Hover) to fill out appropriate tax forms.

Please note that you cannot apply for a Social Security Number until at least 10 days after your initial arrival to the United States. You must have completed the OIS check-in process and received a continuing I-20 before you can apply for a SSN.

If you already have a SSN:

  • Complete an I-9 (Employment Eligibility form) at the OIS.
  • Take the completed, OIS-signed I-9 form to your employer (general student employment to Career Services in McKenny Hall, Graduate Assistants to Boone Hall, and vendors directly to your place of employment).
  • Make an appointment with the Payroll department (104 Hover) to fill out appropriate tax forms.
