Graduation

There are many different things students need to do to prepare for graduation and post-graduation plans. The following chart helps you to be prepared- before your final semester, in your final semester, at commencement, and after your final semester. There are various deadlines (especially during your 60-day grace period for immigration), so plan accordingly!

Before Your Final Semester

Request a Graduation Audit

Keep track of academic process using your program of study. Work with your academic advisor to ensure you are completing the graduation requirements.

Look at your I-20 end date and inform OIS immediately if you will not complete your degree by that date

If you will not complete your degree program by the end date on your I-20, you MUST inform the OIS by submitting an Extension of Stay request. Your Extension of Stay request must be approved BEFORE the current I-20 end date. You cannot extend your I-20 after the current end date. Look at your I-20 end date and inform OIS immediately if you will complete your degree BEFORE that date.

If you will complete your degree program before your I-20 end date, you MUST inform the OIS by submitting a Shorten Program request. See http://www.emich.edu/ois/forms.html for the Shorten Program request form.

Attend an Optional Practical Training (OPT) seminar if you are thinking about working after graduation

Review what classes you will take in your final term

You cannot take only online classes in your final term. If you are only taking non-face-to-face classes in your final term, you need to submit a Non-Face-to-Face request http://www.emich.edu/ois/forms.html within the first week of class in your final term.

 

 

 

Your Final Semester

Submit a Reduced Hours Form to the OIS if you are under enrolled

If you are under enrolled (less than 12 credits for undergrads, less than 8 credits for grads), you must submit a complete Reduced Hours Form by the first week of class. See http://www.emich.edu/ois/registrationreq.html for enrollment requirements and forms.

Commencement

Attend the Commencement Ceremony

Commencement ceremonies follow each Fall (December) and Winter (April) terms. For more information on the ceremony, please see http://www.emich.edu/commencement/.

Obtain your diploma

Diplomas (with a complimentary transcript) are mailed approximately six to eight weeks after the close of the semester in which the degree is conferred when proper application for graduation is made. Students can request additional copies at http://www.emich.edu/registrar/formslibrary/forms/requestforreplacementdiploma.pdf

During your Grace Period (60 days following your I-20 end date/final semester)

Apply for Optional Practical Training, if interested in working after graduation (if you haven't already).

You are required to attend an OPT seminar before you apply for OPT. See the OPT informational packet at http://www.emich.edu/ois/forms/12%20month%20OPT%20packet.pdf. The U.S. government MUST receive your OPT application before the 60th day following your I-20 end date.

Transfer to another U.S. school, if applicable

If you will transfer to another U.S. school following your EMU graduation, you must be admitted to AND transfer to that new school within 60 days following your I-20 end date. You must request the OIS to transfer your SEVIS record to the new school using the Transfer Out Request found at http://www.emich.edu/ois/forms.html

Begin a new degree program at EMU, if applicable

If you will begin a new degree program at EMU after your previous degree completion, you must be admitted to AND update your I-20 with the new program information within 60 days following your previous degree's I-20 end date. Be sure to apply for your new degree with International Admissions as soon as possible and inform the OIS of your plans.

Leaving the U.S. and not returning as an F-1 student

You are allowed to stay in the United States for 60 days following your I-20 end date and program completion. Please inform the OIS if you will leave the United States after your degree and not return for OPT or begin a new degree.

Change of Status to another visa type, in applicable

If you are in the process of applying for a Change of Status (to another non-immigrant visa) or Adjustment of Status (Permanent Residency) in the United States, please update the OIS by completing an Immigration Status Change Form at http://www.emich.edu/ois/forms.html
