About Us

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is home to 9 undergraduate physics and physics teaching programs, 4 related minors, and 3 masters programs.

Physics at Eastern was recognized by the American Institute of Physics as one of the top producers of physics majors in the country among master's level universities.

All courses in the physics program are taught by PhD faculty with active research agendas.

All of our courses are small and personal.  The largest physics class typically has 36 students. At EMU we believe working with students one-on-one is the best way to help you succeed and become future scientists.

Undergraduate research is our focus! You can find research opportunities in the Plasma Lab, the Surface Science Lab, Modern Optics Lab, Laser Physics Lab, the Computational Space Physics Lab, and Sherzer Observatory.

Our graduates often earn national fellowships to attend graduate school, become scientific researchers at national labs such as Sandia or Los Alamos, or work for area businesses in optics, software development, electronics, automotive design, green energy, production, and hospitals.
