Date Note
1/5/11 GREEN YOUR COMMUTE: As gas prices climb ever higher, now is a great time to consider alternative commuting options. Calculate your cost of commuting at http://mdotwas1.mdot.state.mi.us/public/rideshare/drivingcost.cfm and find a person to share your ride at https://mirideshare.org/en-US/. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu.
1/11/11 ENERGY REDUCTIONS NEEDED: With the increased student population on campus, EMU's energy use is on the rise for the first time since 2007. To help combat this growth, do your part to reduce energy use on campus. Close doors and windows left open. Turn off lights in unoccupied spaces. Turn off unneeded electronics. For more tips, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/notesarchive.html. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu.
1/25/11 GO GREEN, PARK GREEN: While it may often seem like there is no parking available on campus, there are plenty of spaces available in the Green Lots on the north side of campus. Save time and gas by heading to these lots when arriving on campus. Visit http://www.emich.edu/parkingsolutions/ for more information. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu.
1/26/10 ENERGY IDOL VOTING NOW OPEN: Vote for your favorite entry for this year's EMU Energy Idol contest at http://www.emich.edu/physplant/energyidol.php. Voting will remain open until February 5, so vote early and vote often. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu.
2/2/11 RECYCLING SHOWS IMPROVEMENT: In 2010, EMU recycled 263 tons of waste at a recycling rate of 9.7%. This is 97 tons more material recycled in 2010 than 2009, with a nearly 3% improvement in recycling rate. Be on the lookout for new recycling stations across campus, and be sure to recycle as much as possible. For more information on recycling at EMU, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/recycling.html. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu.
2/8/11 SUSTAINABILITY IN MARK JEFFERSON: The addition to the Mark Jefferson Science Complex incorporates a number of sustainable features, including going for LEED certification. In the bathrooms alone, there is energy-efficient lighting, motion sensors to turn off the lights when not needed, low flow urinals and faucets, dual flush toilets, and hand dryers instead of paper towel dispensers. All of these features, and many more that are used throughout the building, help to make the building the greenest on campus.
2/15/11 BUILDING ENERGY REPORTS: Ever wonder how much it costs to keep the lights on in your office? How about to heat the conference room you frequently use? Now, you can see what it takes to energize each building on campus. Just go to http://www.emich.edu/physplant/energyconservation.html and look at the Building Energy Reports.
3/8/11 RECYCLETHON 2011: Recyclethon 2011 is underway! All of the dorms and Brown/Munson are competing to see who can increase their recycling rate the most this month. The winner will receive the coveted Recyclethon crown. For more information, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/recyclethon.html.
3/15/11 GREEN WEEK: Celebrate all things green at EMU by joining us for GREEN Week. Activities are planned for each day. For more information, visit http://www.emich.edu/vision/programs/green.php.
3/23/11 WORLD WATER DAY: March 22 is World Water Day (http://www.worldwaterday.org/). This is a good chance to find ways to save water in your everyday activities. If you notice water being wasted on campus (leaking faucets, running toilets, dripping showerheads), put a work order in at http://mrgreenwrench.emich.edu.
3/29/11 RECYCLETHON COMING TO A CLOSE: This is the last week for Recyclethon 2011. The competition, an inter-dorm challenge to determine which dorm can recycle the most, wraps up on March 31. The winner will be announced in April. Last year, Dining Commons I complex (Best, Buell, Downing and Wise) were the winners. Check out http://www.emich.edu/physplant/recyclethon.html for more information.
4/5/11 BROWN/MUNSON WINS RECYCLTEHON 2011: Brown/Munson was the winner of Recyclethon 2011 by increasing their recycling by 500%. In all, the competing buildings increased their recycling by 80%, with each building showing an increase. For more information on Recyclethon, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/recyclethon.html.
4/12/11 EARTH DAY 2011: April 22 is Earth Day. Take this opportunity to improve the environment by donating or recycling unused books and papers, making sure your home is ready for summer's warmer temperatures, or by organizing an event in your neighborhood or on campus. Pledge your act at http://act.earthday.org/.
5/17/11 LOW ELECTRIC USE IN APRIL: April 2011 was the lowest recorded April electric usage and the fifth lowest monthly total since data collection began in 2001. To see how much electricity your building is consuming, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/meters.html. For historical building energy usage, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/energyconservation.html and click on Building Energy Reports.
6/28/11 BUILDING ENERGY REPORTS: Ever wonder how much it costs to keep the lights on in your office? How about to cool the conference room you frequently use? Now, you can see what it takes to power, heat and cool each building on campus. Just go to http://www.emich.edu/physplant/energyconservation.html and look at the Building Energy Reports to see how your building performs.
7/19/11 BEAT THE HEAT: As temperatures remain elevated this week, do what you can to reduce energy use on campus.
