INCREASED RECYCLING AT EMU: For the first time, EMU provided additional recycling opportunities for students during move-in to help decrease the amount of trash generated. Also, for the first time, recycling was available at the EMU vs. Army football game. For more information about recycling on campus, visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/recycling.html. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |

EMU PARTNERS WITH ENERGY STAR: At Eastern Michigan University, we are doing more with less. We've committed to help improve the energy efficiency of America's commercial and industrial buildings by 10 percent or more through the ENERGY STAR Challenge. As we join the ranks of other leaders in energy efficiency, our energy savings are reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. Visit http://www.emich.edu/physplant/green.html for more information. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 9/22/09 |
SWITCH TO FLAT: The average old CRT computer monitor uses about 120 more kilowatt-hours in electricity per year than a typical new flat screen monitor. By switching to a flat screen monitor, you can save over $9.40 per year. Consider going flat on your next computer upgrade. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 9/29/09 |
HEATING SEASON SAVINGS: As heating season quickly approaches, it is important to remember to keep the temperature as low as comfort allows. By turning down your thermostat even 1 degree, you could save about $3 per year in a 100 square foot office. Campus-wide, a 1 degree lower temperature setting would save over $130,000 per year. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 10/7/09 |
TREES AT EMU: EMU has planted over 110 trees so far this year. The trees that have been planted include a variety of red maple and pear trees. Take a look around campus and see how many new trees you can spot. Keep in mind that each tree stores about 13 pounds of carbon per year, reducing EMU's carbon footprint. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 10/13/09 |
KEEP ON SAVING: Since the beginning of this fiscal year (July 1), EMU has saved approximately 4.3% of the electricity it used over the same time period last year. Also, these savings are a decrease of over 6% from two years ago. Many of your efforts have directly contributed to this reduction, so keep shutting off the lights and turning off computers! This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 10/20/09 |
COGENERATION SAVES CO2: EMU's gas turbine, located in the Heating Plant, uses natural gas to produce both electricity and heat. The heat is then used to make steam, providing heat and hot water to many campus buildings. If the University's turbine ran for 80% of the year, we would save over 14,000 tons of CO2 per year compared to grid-produced electricity, the equivalent of removing 2,326 vehicles off of the road each year! For more information, go to http://www.emich.edu/physplant/green.html. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |

| 2/23/10 |
WINTER RECESS ENERGY TIPS: As you leave for break this week, consider some ways to save energy. Make sure all lights and computers are shut off, the thermostat is turned back to 60 F, and energy "vampires" (items such as chargers, printers, and other electronics) are unplugged. These steps will help save energy all break long. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's energy and sustainability manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439 or e-mail smooreii@emich.edu. |
| 3/2/10 |

HOLIDAY BREAK ENERGY REMINDERS: As you leave for break over the next two weeks, consider some ways to save energy. Make sure all lights and computers are shut off, the thermostat is turned back to 60 F, all windows are closed, and energy "vampires" (items such as chargers, printers, and other electronics) are unplugged. These steps will help save energy all break long. This campus energy/sustainability note comes from Steven Moore II, EMU's Energy and Sustainability Manager. For more information, call him at 487-3439, e-mail him at smooreii@emich.edu or follow him on Twitter @EMUgreen. |

SUSTAINABILITY IN MARK JEFFERSON: The addition to the Mark Jefferson Science Complex incorporates a number of sustainable features, including going for LEED certification. In the bathrooms alone, there is energy-efficient lighting, motion sensors to turn off the lights when not needed, low flow urinals and faucets, dual flush toilets, and hand dryers instead of paper towel dispensers. All of these features, and many more that are used throughout the building, help to make the building the greenest on campus. |
