The University's Recycling Program encompasses recycling in campus office and
classroom buildings, as well as housing and athletic facilities. The student-staffed
program initially was designed to collect white paper, colored paper, mixed
office paper, newspaper, and corrugated cardboard. The program has been considerably
broadened and now also includes: books (both soft- and hard-cover), magazines,
telephone directories, brochures, glossy paper, fax paper, paperboard (packaging
boxes), polystyrene (Styrofoam), batteries, tires, pallets, fluorescent and
incandescent spent lighting tubes and bulbs, leaves, and computer and TV components.
Look below for a complete list of recyclable materials.
Physical Plant provides a well-lit, secure storage recycling space with easy
access for the recycling van. A 40-yard compactor unit located behind the Plant
accommodates all types of paper-based recyclables. The compactor reservoir is
regularly hauled to a local materials recycling facility. Previously, collected
materials for recycling were required to be sorted and taken to various locations
by the student staff. Advancements in technology now allow all paper-type recycling
to be co-mingled. The addition of the compactor has eliminated the need to haul
recyclable materials daily, thus the program was able to expand in a cost-efficient
manner.
Desktop containers are available upon request. Bins are located in auditoriums,
labs, and office copy rooms, and have been added to all residence halls and apartment
office front desks.
