UNIVERSITY POLICY STATEMENT
Eastern Michigan University will comply with all
applicable provisions of the Animal Welfare Act
and other federal and state statutes and regulations
relating to animals to ensure the humane use of
animals in research and education.
UNIVERSITY PRACTICE
University practices for implementing this policy
include:
- The application of this policy as
specified by the procedures detailed
in the provisions of the Animal Welfare
Act as administered by the United
States Department of Agriculture Animal
Plant Health Inspection Service.
- The University will maintain an
Animal Care Program in accordance
with the National Institute of Health
Office for Protection from Research
Risk policies for the humane care
and use of laboratory animals.
- The provost will appoint the Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
which shall be responsible for drafting
procedures for the implementation
of this policy and for its enforcement.
- The IACUC will provide supervision,
coordination and review of all projects
and classroom instruction that includes
the use of animals.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
The provost and vice president for academic affairs
shall have responsibility for the implementation
and administration of this policy. The provost
shall appoint the Institutional Animal Care and
Use Committee (IACUC), which shall report directly
to the provost.
SCOPE OF POLICY COVERAGE
This policy applies to any University activity
involving the use of animals covered under the Animal
Welfare Act.
