Faculty Activities 2007-2008 Academic Year

  • March 8, 2008. Dr. Joanna Vecchiarelli Scott was nominated to the American Political Science Association Council. The APSA Council is the governing body of APSA and each Council member is a well-known pundit in the field. Dr. Scott's nomination to the APSA Council is a great honor for our Department.   • Dr. Richard Stahler-Sholk is one of the two recipients of the 2008 Ronald Collins Award for Service to the University. This Distinguished Faculty Award is the highest award that any faculty member can earn from Eastern Michigan University in one of the three primary areas of faculty responsibility, i.e., teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and service.


  • Dr. Raymond A. Rosenfeld presented at the International Conference on Municipal Economic Development Toolkit, March 3-4, 2008, Kyiv, Ukraine the lecture "Cultural and Heritage Tourism". Click here to view the Power Point Presentation

    While in Ukraine, Dr. Raymond A. Rosenfeld also presented a guest lecture on "The Challenges of Federalism: USA, EU, USSR and Ukraine" to the European Integration students in the Master of Public Administration Program at the Ukrainian National Academy of Public Administration, Office of the President of Ukraine, on March 7, 2008.   • Dr. Raymond A. Rosenfeld was the invited keynote speaker at a conference in October 2007, in Halden, Norway on the topic of "Does Local Democracy Matter?" sponsored by ?stfold University College and Oslo University College. Participants in the conference were from Norway, Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania, and the focus was the presentation of findings on a comparative local government decision-making study. While in Norway, Dr. Rosenfeld was a guest lecturer on the topics of the American Presidential Election and Intergovernmental Relations to undergraduate classes in both Halden and Oslo.


  • Dr. Rosenfeld is also co-editing (with Laura A. Reese of Michigan State University) an upcoming special symposium issue on Comparative Civic Culture for the Journal of Urban Affairs.


  • Dr. Joanna Vecchiarelli Scott joined the group of eight Associate Editors at Perspectives on Politics, a journal of the American Political Science Association.


  • Dr. Robert Postic has successfully defended his PhD dissertation titled "Political Tolerance: The Effects of Religion and Religiosity."


  • Drs. Richard Stahler-Sholk and Judith Kullberg, in collaboration with Dr. Richard Douglas, have developed a Field Study Program "Poverty, Human Rights, and Health" to be delivered in El Salvador


  • Four faculty, Volker Krause, Judith Kullberg, Joanna Scott and Raymond Rosenfeld, have applied for the Faculty Research Fellowship. Dr. Jeff Bernstein has applied for a sabbatical.

Grants and Followships

  • Dr. Judith Kullberg is in Russia on a Fulbright Fellowship "The Development of Russian Civil Society: A Comparative Case Study in the Samara Region." In addition to her research project Dr. Kullberg will teach, in Russian, international relations courses.


  • Dr. Jeff Bernstein has received a grant, "Expert and Novice Political Thinking: Implications for Learning" from the Spencer Foundation in amount of $39,925.


  • Dr. Adrian Lottie has received a grant from the Institute for Geospatial Research and Education, in amount of $3000, to work on developing a GIS-based service contracts with Michigan Business and Professional Association
