This campus organization was formed by students in 2006 to promote awareness and action on issues of international human rights was. The EMU chapter is affiliated with Amnesty International USA, one of the many country sections that make up Amnesty International worldwide with more than 2.2 million members and supporters in over 150 countries and territories around the world.
Amnesty International describes its mission as follows:
"Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone. We believe human rights abuses anywhere are the concern of people everywhere. So, outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world, we work to improve people's lives through campaigning and international solidarity. Our mission is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated."
The EMU chapter has organized very successful human rights film festivals, speaker events, and advocacy campaigns. Activities have included a successful forum of international lawyers and other speakers discussing the concept of "enemy combatants" being held in Guant¨¢namo; a public display and informational table set up for several days outside Pray-Harrold to educate and engage the campus community on the issue of Guant¨¢namo; letter-writing on behalf of a Burmese political prisoner; informational campaigns about sweatshops and fair trade; and a poster display about the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
