Division of Information Technology to report to Provost's office
July 19, 2012
To Students, Faculty and Staff:
As part of our ongoing efforts to identify ways to operate more effectively and efficiently and to provide greater support to students, I am pleased to announce that the Division of Information Technology (IT) will now report to the Provost's office. This move continues the strategic realignment of key functions designed to achieve our overarching objective of improving the delivery of academic and support services to our students.
As part of the transition, it is important to note that no internal structural or staff changes in IT will take place as a result of this action, and ongoing IT operations as they apply to support services requested by students, faculty and staff will be maintained in the same manner as they are currently managed. Programs such as the Help Desk and Computer Refresh will continue to operate as they do currently. From a user standpoint, there will be no change in IT operations. Carl Powell's new title is Assistant Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Given the important role of technology in Eastern's future, he will have a dotted-line reporting relationship to me and will continue to serve as a member of the Executive Council. The operating model of information technology offices reporting to the provost is relatively common in higher education.
The alignment provides a strong foundation for our continued emphasis on key university priorities including upgrading classroom technology and the expansion of campus Wi-Fi capabilities. These priorities are increasingly important as we provide greater support to classroom infrastructure and a more technology-enabled environment that encompasses the full range of academic and student services, from admissions and enrollment, to academic advising, to the classroom, and to student life.
Additionally, we had been operating with two leadership teams -- Cabinet and Executive Council -- with all members of the Cabinet included in the slightly larger team of Executive Council members. In a further step to streamline operations, we will now have a single leadership team that will continue to be called Executive Council, with all of the members as currently included.
