Dear Eastern Michigan University Students, Faculty and Staff,
Welcome to the start of a wonderful new school year! It is one of the great joys of my job to walk or bike the campus and see the vibrant community of Eastern Michigan come to life in the Fall.
I thank all of you for being part of this historic, proud and caring institution. We are 163 years old and have never been stronger. This is thanks to each and every one of you!
We are well on our way to having the largest class of new undergraduate students in the history of Eastern. As of today we have more than 4,900 new undergrads -- our previous largest new undergrad class was just over 4,750 in 2001. Of the new undergrads, more than 2,500 are freshmen compared to a total of 2,130 at the start of last year. One of the most exciting features of our new class of freshmen is the academic focus they bring, with an increasing number having high school GPAs of over 3.5 and 3.0. The number of people living in residence halls has also risen. We currently have 3,350 students in residence halls, an increase of 337 from last year. We are pleased to see more and more students taking advantage of the wonderful academic and campus opportunities Eastern has to offer.
We are pleased to welcome 18 new faculty members to Eastern. They join a team of faculty, staff and administrators who are committed to helping our students succeed. We also have approved 37 new faculty searches for Fall 2013.
I invite you to walk through our new Science Complex -- the second phase was just completed. We also completed a major overhaul of the Hoyt Residence Hall, which is part of the towers complex on the north side of campus. These are examples of the many improvements we have been making this summer around campus, including enhanced technology in the classroom, expanded wireless capability, new walkways, improved parking areas, new windows and a variety of other cost-effective projects designed to enhance the student and employee experience at Eastern.
I look forward to meeting you and seeing you around campus. Please know that I welcome opportunities to talk about your experience here and can be reached at email@example.com or by phone at 734-487-2211.
Best wishes for a great year,
Susan W. Martin
