28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. President's Luncheon

December 11, 2013

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

One of the signature events at Eastern Michigan University takes place on Monday, January 20, 2014, when we host the 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. President's Luncheon. The luncheon begins at 11:45 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom, and features a keynote address by Geoffrey Canada, nationally renowned for his pioneering work in education reform as President and Chief Executive Officer for Harlem's Children Zone, which The New York Times Magazine called "one of the most ambitious social experiments of our time."

The President's Luncheon also features the presentation of the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards, local high school essay contest winners, a short performance by Eastern's CloseUP Theatre Troupe, and musical selections by the Eastern Michigan University Jazz Ensemble. More information about the luncheon can be found at www.emich.edu/mlk.

Tickets are $10 for Eastern students and $20 for faculty, staff and other community members. As a campus community, we want to continue to invest in our students and in creating tomorrow 's leaders. We encourage departments to consider purchasing tickets for student employees as an opportunity to support their professional development. Tickets can be purchased at the EMU Convocation Center ticket office, the Student Center ticket office located on the 1st floor of the Student Center, or online at www.emutix.com. Departments are not allowed to purchase tickets for employees.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration week for 2014 begins on Thursday, January 16, with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March on campus. For a complete schedule of this year's events, please visit http://www.emich.edu/mlk/schedule.php.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the MLK Celebration 2014 Committee co-chairs Keith Jason (kjason@emich.edu), Dawn Pearcy (dpearcy@emich.edu), Reggie Barnes (rbarne13@emich.edu), and the many others behind the scenes who help make this event a success every year. If you have questions about the luncheon or any of the MLK Celebration events, please contact one of the co-chairs above for assistance.

I hope to see you at the President's Luncheon. For those of you who have not attended in the past, you will see why this is such a special day at Eastern.
