PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT SPONSORS 21st ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN

The 21st annual convention of the Behavior Analysis Association of Michigan will be held Thursday and Friday March 22-23 in the new Student Center on the Campus of Eastern Michigan University. The convention will feature papers, posters, and workshop on all areas of behavioral psychology. Presenters and participants represent over a two dozen colleges, universities, and other organizations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, New York, Wisconsin, Illinois, California, and Ontario. EMU PSYCHOLOGY PH.D. STUDENT PUBLISHES ARTICLE ON ROLE OF MOTIVATION IN SUBSTANCE ABUSE BY STUDENT ATHLETES

Ph.D. student, Bradley Rockafellow, and faculty member Karen Saules have published their article, "Substance Use and Abuse by College Students: The Role of Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic Motivation for Athletic Involvement," in the prestigious journal, The Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Rockafellow and Saules found that student athletes who were extrinsically motivated for participation showed higher rates of substance abuse that intrinsically motivated athletes (article abstract). Saules and her students also have articles forthcoming in the Journal of American College Health, the Journal of Cancer Research, and Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS AND FACULTY PRESENT AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CONVENTIONS

EMU Psychology Department students and faculty have been busy giving dozens of papers, posters, and other presentations at state, regional, national, and international psychology conventions.

Students Heather Anson, Lazslo Erdoti, and Heather Nix, along with faculty members Stuart Karabenick, James Todd, Dennis Delprato, and Peter Holmes (Emeritus) presented several papers at the convention of the Behavior Analysis Association of Michigan (BAAM) in March, 2006. In May 2006, ten papers and posters were presented at the convention of the Association for Behavior Analysis (ABA) by EMU students Heather Anson, Joseph Golson, Amy Drayton, Jacqueline Fleischer, Tamara Pawich, and Christopher Lothamer, and faculty members Marilyn Bonem, Renee Lajiness-O'Neill, and James T. Todd. Presentations at the ABA convention included papers and posters on social reinforcement in rats, the use of Macintosh computers in the research laboratory, the reasons for the increasing acceptance of non-scientific treatments for developmental disabilities, and alternatives to the "cognitive map" theory for spatial location.

EMU students and faculty have been especially active in the area of addiction research. Students Jessica Irish, Lindsay King and faculty member Karen Saules presented "The Relationship Between Smoking Initiation, Depression, and Body Dissatisfaction in College Women" at the convention of the Midwestern Psychological Association in Chicago. Saules and students Amy Collings, Bradley Rockafellow presented a poster on "A Longitudinal Investigation of Predictors of Successful Weight Maintenance by Women Enrolled in Community-Based Weight-Loss Programs" at the Fall convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy in Chicago.
