PSYCHOLOGY PH.D. STUDENT PUBLISHES ARTICLE ON ROLE OF MOTIVATION
IN SUBSTANCE ABUSE BY STUDENT ATHLETES
Ph.D. student, Bradley Rockafellow,
and faculty member Karen Saules have published
their article, "Substance Use and Abuse by College
Students: The Role of Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic
Motivation
for Athletic Involvement," in the prestigious
journal, The Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.
Rockafellow and Saules found that student athletes
who were extrinsically motivated for participation
showed higher rates of substance abuse that intrinsically
motivated athletes (article
abstract). Saules and her students also have
articles forthcoming in the Journal of American
College Health, the Journal of Cancer
Research,
and Nicotine and Tobacco Research. PSYCHOLOGY
