Student Statistics

In general, total Verbal and Quantitative GRE scores of successful applicants are above 1150. Data for the written section of the GRE has only been available for the last few years. Consequently, these data are not reported. However, students admitted have had at least a 4.5 (out of 6.0) on the written section. The average undergraduate GPA of students admitted to the program typically ranges from 3.4 to 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.

Both the GRE scores and GPA certainly influence the overall picture of the application, but no single factor rules out a candidate. However, we do require that all applicants have successfully completed 20 credit hours in psychology that include courses in General Psychology, Statistics, Abnormal Psychology, and Experimental Psychology.

Student match with our program's philosophy and with faculty research programs also is an important consideration. Potential applicants should consider the interests and expertise of our faculty and compare them to their own educational goals. Even the best student would be ill served if accepted to a program without mentors who could facilitate and share their interests. The EMU Clinical Psychology Program follows the scientist-practitioner model of training with a concentration in mental healthcare systems organization.

Research experience is weighed heavily in the decision making process. Students accepted to the program typically have demonstrated interest and experience in research.

Our faculty cover a broad range of theoretical orientations toward clinical practice. Most students find ample opportunities to match their clinical interests with clinical placements available at EMU. However, students with strong and specific clinical interests should evaluate whether EMU offers relevant experiences.

Program Costs for 2008-2009

The Graduate School at Eastern Michigan University covers the costs of all tuition and registration fees for doctoral students in Clinical Psychology (except for a one time Records Initiation Fee and Student Health Insurance). The Graduate school will pay for up to 36 credits the first year, 27 credits during years 2 and 3, 12 credits the fourth year, and 4 credits during the internship year. These limits exceed the 90 credits required for graduation. Students are responsible for the Records Initiation Fee ($88 fee paid once during the first semester of enrollment) and their own health insurance coverage (the University offers an optional low cost plan for $913 per year). At most a first year doctoral student could expect to pay $1,001.00 (if health insurance is purchased). More extensive health coverage is also available for an additional cost.

Tuition and fees for the first year of the doctoral program are roughly $14,296.90 (for a Michigan or Ohio resident) or $26,046.90 (for a non-resident). Again these costs are covered by the Graduate School. Additionally, all doctoral students receive a stipend of approximately $15,000 per year (in addition to the tuition remission) for the first four years in the program. Doctoral students are also eligible for loans from the Financial Aid Office.

The graduation fee for all students is currently $95.00 and doctoral students are responsible for this fee when applying for graduation with their masterŐs and/or doctorate.
