Student
Statistics
These
annual statistics for admitted students may be misleading,
because we accept a number of foreign students and other
special students for whom certain GRE scores may not be
a valid predictor of success in our graduate program. In
general, total Verbal and Quantitative GRE scores of successful
applicants are above 1150. Data for the written section
of the GRE has only been available for the last few years.
Consequently, these data are not reported. However, students
admitted for the past year have had at least a 4.5 (out
of 6.0) on the written section. The average undergraduate
GPA of students admitted to the program typically ranges
from 3.4 to 3.9 on a 4.0 scale.
Both
the GRE scores and GPA certainly influence the overall
picture of the application, but no single factor rules
out a candidate. However, we do require that all applicants
have successfully completed 20 credit hours in psychology
that include courses in General Psychology, Statistics,
Abnormal Psychology, and Experimental Psychology.
Student
match with our program's philosophy and with faculty research
programs also is an important consideration. Potential
applicants should consider the interests and expertise
of our faculty and compare them to their own educational
goals. Even the best student would be ill served if accepted
to a program without mentors who could facilitate and share
their interests. The EMU Clinical Psychology Program follows
the scientist-practitioner model of training with a concentration
in mental healthcare systems organization.
Research
experience is weighed heavily in the decision making process.
Students accepted to the program typically have demonstrated
interest and experience in research.
Our faculty
cover a broad range of theoretical orientations toward
clinical practice. Most students find ample opportunities
to match their clinical interests with clinical placements
available at EMU. However, students with strong and specific
clinical interests should evaluate whether EMU offers relevant
experiences.
