Welcome!
Eastern Michigan University offers First-year Interest Groups (FIGs) as a practical yet innovative program for you as a first year student. The FIG program creates an enhanced learning community to
- explore common interests,
- save time, money and energy,
- design academic and career plans,
- develop subject mastery, critical thinking skills, and to interact with professors,
- form study groups, and collaborate on projects,
- build lasting friendships.
In a learning community, you take up to three college-level courses (7-10 credit hours) with the same students. You complete your academic schedule with two to three courses open to the general university population.
Do FIGs count towards my degree?
Whether you are certain of your major, or still undecided, all courses within a FIG satisfy general education, major or minor program, and/or elective credit towards graduation. Even degree programs that restrict student electives, such as, Elementary Education, Nursing, and Engineering Technology, participate with their own FIGs, demonstrating how much they value the benefits students derive from participating in an enhanced learning community.
How do I Sign Up?
- Read the FIG Descriptions.
- Pick a Schedule.
- Sign-up with you meet with your academic advisor at Fast Track.
