FIG A: Exploring Nursing

Appropriate for these majors: nursing-intent

Description: In NURS 110 discuss program requirements and application procedures for admission to the School of Nursing, develop selected skills essential to professional practice, and explore specialized fields and careers within nursing.

FIG B: Exploring Fundamental Sciences

Appropriate for these majors: biology, biochemistry, toxicology, chemistry, pre-med, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinarian and other pre-professional medical sciences

Description: In UNIV 100 explore personal strengths and interests as they relate to science careers, including medical sciences, research and industry. Discuss opportunities and implications of DNA research, issues of intellectual property, and the terminology and practices of scientific method.

FIG C: Exploring Human Service and Health Sciences

Appropriate for these majors: most majors including criminology and criminal justice, health administration, occupational therapy psychology, sociology and social work as well as undecided students with general interest in the field

Description: In UNIV 100 explore the diverse opportunities and challenges of work in the human services sector. Get first hand experience as a client by spending the day in a wheel chair, or with limited hearing and vision.How do you manage the physical environment as well as the social challenges on campus? What is the responsibility of society and institutions towards individual differences?

FIG D: Exploring Engineering Applications

Appropriate for these majors: computer engineering technology, electronic engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology

Description: In UNIV 100 seek to understand academic and scholarship opportunities as well as strategies for professional success in the highly demanding field of engineering technology.

FIG E:  Exploring the Future of Automation

Appropriate for theses majors: most arts, education, humanities and social science majors and undecided students

Description: In COSC 161 build and program Lego-robots, in INDT 150 expand your technological literacy and understanding of technology’s impact on society, and in UNIV 100 explore further the future of automation and its practical usefulness and related ethical issues. For example, does office automation save time and increase productivity or create waste and overload us with information? Do robots on the factory floor create jobs or eliminate them?

FIG F and G: Exploring Elementary Education

Appropriate for theses majors: elementary education program majors and special education with elementary teacher certification

Description: UNIV 100 consists of a variety of activities, readings, presentations, and other assignments designed to acclimate you to university life and assist you as you begin the journey towards becoming a teacher. Chart a path through complicated requirements of teacher certification.

FIG H: Exploring Education and Diversity

Appropriate for theses majors: elementary, secondary and special education majors and undecided students

Description: In UNIV 100 explore issues of identity as it relates to ability, appearance, gender, nationality, generational differences, race and ethnicity, regions and language, religion, sexual identity, and socio-economic status.

FIG I and J: Exploring Business

Appropriate for theses majors: all business majors and undecided students

Description: Explore careers in business, current ethical issues facing today’s business leaders, personal finance, and strategic academic planning. Meet COB faculty members, industry professionals, and related student clubs to establish your professional network.

FIG K: Exploring Leadership: Global and Personal

Appropriate for theses majors: all majors and undecided students

Description: In UNIV 100 examine the qualities and characteristics of strong leaders as well as styles of leadership. What is the role of the United States as a global leader – militarily, democratically, or in media, commerce, and the environment?  What leadership roles do you choose for yourself?

FIG L: Exploring the Law, Ethics and Values

Appropriate for theses majors: all majors and undecided students

Description: In UNIV 100 explore the conflicting relationships between personal values, ethics and the law. In a recent study, 55% of high school seniors said that they might go against their personal values into questionable business ethical territory if they were certain that they would not get caught by the law.

FIG M: Exploring Communication in the Computer Age

Appropriate for theses majors: most arts, education, humanities, and social science majors and undecided students

Description: In UNIV 100 communicate with each other and the instructor in a paperless environment. Draw together the skills and tools learned in COSC 101 and CTAS 124 for personal growth as well as developing specific academic presentation skills, such as an online portfolio and multi-media presentations.

FIG N: Exploring Media Image and Culture

Appropriate for theses majors: all majors and undecided students

Description: In UNIV 100 examine how toys, TV, music, and advertising create artificial standards for beauty, power, and intelligence. Become aware of the messages that influence your understanding of what it means to be a man or a woman.

FIG O, P, and Q: Exploring Human Potential

Appropriate for theses majors: all majors and undecided students

Description: An in depth look at personal development and success strategies for building on strengths and reaching your personal, professional, and academic potential. Examine motivation, adult development, and personality theory. Practice applying new learning strategies for subject mastery.
