Frequently Asked Questions - New Students

The application requires a Personal Statement. What should it include, and how long should it be?
The Personal Statement should include information about why you want to attend EMU’s graduate program, what your future goals are and how they incorporate your EMU education, and why you would be a good candidate for the program. Statements do not need to be longer than one page.

How long does it take to hear back from EMU regarding my admission to the University?
Once all your application materials have been received, the Office of Admissions forwards your information to the College of Business for an admission decision. Typically the process takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.

How do I know if all my materials have been received?
You can contact the Office of Admissions at 487-3060 or the COB Graduate Advising Office at 487-4444.

How can I find out more information about the GMAT exam? Where do I register for the test?

I think I want to do an Independent Study course. Where do I start?
Independent Study courses are for students who have an interest in a particular topic and want to do a detailed project or research paper on that topic. Students are responsible for designing a proposal and securing faculty sponsorship. Graduate Advising has guidelines for creating proposals, and a form for officially registering for the Independent Study.

I’m having trouble registering in MY.EMICH. What do I need to do?
IF you are experiencing problems accessing registration through your MY.EMICH account, contact the ICT Helpdesk at 487-2120.

If you have gotten into the registration system and receive error messages when trying to register for a classes please call the Graduate Advising office to resolve the issue. If you are admitted as a Self-Improvement or Non-Degree student, you’re required to consult an advisor for registration. If you do not fall in to those categories, Graduate Advising can help you resolve the problems with your online registration.

I want to take a class outside of the College of Business. How do I do this?
You need to contact your advisor to get the initial approval to have the class count on your Program of Study. After getting approval from the COB, you must contact the other department in which you wish to take the class to work out any prerequisites or other requirements. Once you receive departmental approval, request that they send an e-mail to the following address: cob.graduate@emich.edu. After the office has received this permission, you will be allowed to register for the class.

I want to change my program within the College of Business (for example; switching from the MBA to the MSA)-how do I do this?
Fill out the “Change of Staus with in the College of Business Form ,” which is available at the Graduate Advising Office in 401 Owen Building. Return the form to the Graduate Advising office. You must meet all of the specific requirements for the new program in order to be considered to change your program. After approval, which takes about 2 weeks, you will receive a letter and a new Program of Study indicating what classes you will need to take.

What are the minimum GPA and GMAT requirements for the different programs?

A class that I want to register for is full. How do I get an override?
Contact the professor of the class for which you wish to register. Have the instructor sign an “Override Form” filled out with the class title, section id, date, student name, student number and date. Bring this form to the Graduate Advising Office to be registered for the class. If you are not granted permission by the instructor, contact the Graduate Advising Office to be put on a “Class Interest List”. This is not a waiting list, so please continue trying to register for the course as seats may become available. If a new section is opened of a course that has a waiting list, or overrides for full courses become available, the students will be contacted. Any available overrides will be granted to those who are at the most need for the class. This is determined by achieved credit hours and date of graduation.

I was admitted with a “Conditional” or “Non-Degree” admission status, and I have met the requirements for the condition to be lifted. How do I change my status to “Degree Admission”?
Contact the Graduate Advising Office (734.487.4444) and let them know that your status needs to be updated. If you have met the requirements, then the conditions will be lifted and you will be granted “Degree Admission” status.
