Prior Learning Assessment

The College of Business Offers Prior Learning Assessment
through Continuing Education

What is prior learning?
Prior learning is defined as articulated college-level learning, including knowledge, skills and competencies, acquired through work and experience. Experience may include travel, volunteer work, independent acquisition of knowledge, and participation in formal courses sponsored by associations, businesses, government, industry, the military and unions, as well as participation in certification programs and professional development courses.

What prior learning options does EMU offer degree-seeking, working adults?
Students have the opportunity to earn credit or to enroll in advanced courses through a variety of options including the following:

  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
  • Credit-by-examination (Available through academic departments when CLEP is not available)
  • Validation
  • Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Credit earned through these options may apply to majors, minors or general electives.
