African American Studies
at Eastern Michigan University

The Department of African American Studies offers an undergraduate major and minor as well as a graduate certificate program. The programs examine the Black experience in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Africa from historical and contemporary perspectives. They study the African American experience not only as an entity in its own right but also as a microcosm of dynamics operating in domestic and global settings. These programs address the multidimensionality of the Black experience, including its historical, political, public policy, legal, economic, sociological, psychological, religious, and artistic dimensions.

Department Objectives

  • To cultivate and disseminate knowledge about the African American experience in particular and the global Black experience in general
  • To provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for effective functioning in a multicultural, multiracial, and technologically advanced society
  • To enhance the students' understanding of the role of multiple factors such as race, gender, and class in shaping the sociopolitical and economic order
  • To empower students to write and think clearly and critically

Job Opportunities for African American Studies Graduates

  • K-12, charter school or higher education teaching positions
  • social and political research
  • management in:
    • public and private corporations
    • multicultural organizations
  • community outreach
  • political organizations
  • human resources management
  • social services and public policy development

This list is, of course, not exhaustive. Note that the African American Studies major or minor can also enhance your career in many areas. The program provides a firm background for graduate and professional education in a variety of disciplines.
