Introduction

We have made no attempt to compile an exhaustive bibliography of books and journals referring to nineteenth century theatre and drama. To do so would needlessly rehash the standard bibliographies. The "List of Works Cited" includes only those works directly mentioned in the calendar and indexes or found to be of particular value in our researches. Scholars interested in a more comprehensive bibliography of ninetenth-century theatre should refer to James Arnott and John Robinson's revision of Robert Lowe's English Theatrical Literature 1559-1900.
