ESL Summer Seminar
(July 21– August 16, 2008 )
The ESL Summer Institute is a program created for international students who have graduated from high school and who wish to learn English and experience American culture and university life in a short-term summer experience. The ESL Summer Institute is a welcoming and inviting on-campus experience, offering you the opportunity to:
- practice oral and written communication in English
- improve your pronunciation of American English
- learn about special topics through academic seminars
- participate in media presentations on American culture
- prepare for the IBT TOEFL
- visit local attractions in Michigan
- meet American college students and professors
- experience college life by living in a college dorm
- assess your English readiness for university study
- learn about the programs and services EMU offers
Sample Curriculum

Students will practice oral and written academic tasks commonly required in university courses, as well as overall English communication. Students will participate in seminars on special topics in various academic fields and practice TOEFL preparation. Students will also learn about American culture through music, video and other media presentations. These courses are non-credit bearing. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the program. |

EMU Campus Services
All students in the ESL Summer Institute will have full access to the library, computer labs, dining facility, the recreation center, and the health center.
Cultural Activities
Students will visit the Henry Ford Museum and other local museums, go to a professional baseball game, go canoeing and picnicking at local parks, and shop at local malls.
ESL Summer Institute Cost
The cost for the ESL Summer Institute is $2800 USD, and includes: registration fee; housing; dining; course fees; course materials; orientation materials; transportation and admission to all scheduled activities and airport transportation to and from campus. Students will be responsible for some meals and souvenir shopping. A detailed schedule will be provided with each confirmation of registration.

Students who live overseas must obtain an F-1 visa and are required to
submit the following documents with their application:
1) Registration form
2) A financial statement (form included in registration form)
3) Proof of Health Insurance (form included in regisration form)
4) Statement of Questions
5) A copy of your Passport

Travel Dates:
Plan to arrive at EMU on July 19 or 20. Checkout at the conclusion of the program is on or before August 17.
