GILMAN SCHOLARSHIP


Spring 2006 Application Cycle Now Open

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is currently accepting applications for Spring 2006. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all U.S. undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

    * The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant or during the term of study abroad.
    * The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad Program eligible for credit by the student's institution of higher education in the U.S.
    * The applicant is studying abroad for a least four weeks in one country.
    * The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or any nation currently under a U.S. Department of State issued Travel Warning.
    * The applicant is studying on a program that begins between December 15, 2005 and April 15, 2006. The Spring cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of four weeks in length. May-term or Summer-only study abroad programs are not eligible.

The goal of the Gilman Scholarship is to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad including, but not limited to:

    * students with high financial need;
    * students from diverse ethnic backgrounds;
    * students going to non-traditional countries (especially outside of Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand);
    * students attending community colleges;
    * students in under-represented fields of study;
    * students of non-traditional age;
    * and students with disabilities.

Award recipients will receive up to $5,000 that can be used towards
eligible study abroad program expenses.

The Gilman Scholarship Program encourages advisors to share information

Fall 2005 Gilman Scholars

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship received a total of
1,303 applications for the 279 Gilman Scholarships awarded for the Fall
2005 cycle. Students awarded represent 182 institutions nationwide and
will study in 56 different countries, including Belarus, El Salvador,
Namibia, Oman, and Singapore.  A list of Fall 2005 Gilman Scholars can

Advisors often utilize this flyer for campus fairs and events where large quantities of handouts may be needed. The J. Henry Owens Scholarship ($150 approx.)


Applicants must

  • Be declared French majors
  • Hold a minimum 2.5 GPA overall and a minimum 3.0 overall in French
  • Have successfully completed two courses in French at the 3 rd year level by the end of the fall semester

 

The R. Clyde Ford Scholarship ($200 approx.)


Applicants must

  • Be declared majors in a Foreign language
  • Hold Senior standing at the time of application
  • While the donor has not indicated a minimum GPA, we give clear preference to the eligible student with the highest overall average

The possibility exists to combine both of these awards for a total of $350 (approximate) if a candidate emerges who meets the separate criteria for both awards (as stipulated above).

 

The Graz Scholarship ($500)


Applicants must

  • Be studying German at EMU as a part of their declared major or minor.
  • Have a strong academic record
  • Be enrolled in the Summer Immersion Program in Graz, Austria

The German faculty have established this award. They select two student each year, each of whom receive a $500 stipend.

 

The Paul Adam Kozma Scholarship ($3000 approx.)


Applicants must

  • Be in their Junior or Senior year
  • Be declared majors in EMU’s Language and International Trade (L.I.T.) program
  • Be able to demonstrate financial need

First preference will be given to L.I.T. majors concentrating in French; however, if no L.I.T. /French candidate is found, the donor has authorized us to extend the award to L.I.T. majors with other language concentrations—German, Japanese and Spanish.

Students interested in any of these above scholarships should complete the application form (download pdf form), and submit it with a statement of purpose and two letters of recommendation from at least two different professors, to the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies,

Recipients of all scholarships are honored at the annual Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies Honors Ceremony. The deadline for applications for currently enrolled or returning students is January 30 of the calendar year for which the award is sought.
