General Information
·
All GEOL
(Geology) and GESC (GEO Science) classes all have a common prefix ESSC
(Earth System Science).
·
The new
prefix represents this group of courses as developing and understanding of the
principle “Spheres” of the Earth System: Lithosphere, Hydrosphere,
Atmosphere, and Biosphere.
·
Most
course have the same number as they did with the GEOG and GESC
prefixes:
Except:
GEOL 160 Physical Geology = ESSC 110 Dynamic Earth System.
GEOL 161 Historical Geology = ESSC 111 Earth System Through
Time.
GESC 320 The Oceans = ESSC 320 Oceanography
(These are the only changes for the
Geology Programs)
How This Affects Current Earth
Science Majors/Minors Entering EMU Before Fall 2003.
1. ESSC 108 (formerly GESC 108) –
Earth Science and ESSC 202 (formerly GESC 202) – Earth Science for
Elementary Education are no longer adequate to take upper level Earth Science
classes.
·
You
must take ESSC 110-The Dynamic Earth System and ESSC 111- The Earth System through
Time before taking most upper level classes.
2. It is highly recommended that you
follow (as closely as possible) the new curriculum as you substitute for
classes that are no longer offered. For example ESSC 229-Rock and Minerals is
an obvious substitution for the GEOL 229-Rock of Michigan, which is no longer
offered.
Otherwise,
you should follow the requirements from the undergraduate handbook from the
year you entered EMU.
How this Affects all students
Entering Fall 2003 or Later:
3. You must follow the new curriculum
for Earth
Science and Geology Majors and Minors. To
major/minor in either of
these areas, you must
start with the following
sequence of courses:
·
ESSC
110 – The Dynamic Earth System
·
ESSC
111 – The Earth System Through Time
If you have
taken ESSC 108 you can take a test to try to pass into ESSC 111.
