Conference and Golf Outing

The Year 2000 Student Planning Conference and "Links To the Future" Golf Outing took place at beautiful Eagle Crest Golf Course and Meeting Room.

Join us as we re-live those special two days in September 2000.

Planning Conference

The Planning Student Conference took place all day on Friday, September 15th. The theme of the conference was "An Elementary Approach to Planning," exploring the interesting and often misunderstood perspective of kids in planning, and the way they are affecting neighborhood designs--or should be!

Speakers included Leslie Kettren, , who spoke about her involvement with the Walkable Communities movement. Architect Richard Mitchell,, presented a planning exercise, "Plan-A-City," and also discussed the new Michigan public school curriculum he is helping create on planning spaces. Debra McRae came from Milwaukee to present a school curriculum package of "Transportation and the Environment." Norm Tyler and Allison Stupka presented the project "WebPolis" which they are developing for community online planning.

The highlight of the day's session was the keynote speaker Larry Beasley the Planning Director for the city of Vancouver. He gave a descriptive slide presentation of the design of residential in-city areas which have allowed well for pedestrian spaces and are attracting many residents to the center city.

"Links To the Future" Golf Outing
The next day was crisp and clear for the golf outing. Dave Schneider and Michelle Aniol unrolled the banner listing the many sponsors for the outing, including Boyne Country Sports, which provided most of the prizes, HNTB Michigan Inc., Snethcamp Chrysler Jeep, which put out on the course a Jeep Wrangler for a hole-in-one prize, and Trinity Wireless Towers, Inc., which sponsored the roving beverage cart. The registration table was manned (womanned?) by Allison Stupka, Cathy Johnson, Judy Bocklage and Michelle, who are checking in Kevin Christiansen.

Golfers collected for the early start, including Planning Program Alumni Brett Lenart, Leslie Kettren and Kevin Kwiatkowski. Other golfer/planners came from out of town, including Kathleen Lomako and Jeff Schroeder. A beautiful putting style was shown by Tom Covert. But putting wasn't enough, and the foursome who won the prize for the lowest score of the day included Dave Carney, Jay James, Kevin Christiansen and David P. Smith.

Some would say the best thing about the day was not their round of golf, but the food served by the Eagle Crest Golf Club. Dinner was followed by a wealth of prizes, this year being given by the co-presidents of PLACE (the student club), Denise Pike and Steve Parks. This year both big prizes--a set of professional golf clubs and a week at Hilton Head--were won by Dino Pasquale of Pasquale Construction, one of the event's donors.

We're already looking forward to next year's outing, aren't we, Jeff and Rocky? Hope you are also!
