The Ann Arbor Historic Street Exhibits Program involves building a series of permanent sidewalk exhibits at sixteen landmark sites throughout downtown Ann Arbor.

Each exhibit will have a theme. The first exhibit will illustrate the hustle and bustle of town life that once centered on Courthouse Square. Other exhibits will showcase the city's artistic heritage and the roles of business, banking, manufacturing and education in shaping the community.

Historic project great addition

Like 'em? You bet.

The first phase of the Downtown Ann Arbor Historical Street Exhibit is a tremendous addition to the lively Main-and-Huron Street hub. And though it will be as much as three years before the entire, 16-part set of sleek historic markers is installed, the project promises to be outstanding.

Undertaken at the suggestion of a group from the Downtown Development Authority almost a dozen years ago, the exhibit captures Ann Arbor history through descriptions and images of places, significant buildings, events, people and periods.

The initial installation--the glass panels in front of the county courthouse and on the intersecting street corners--not only tell the story of the old courthouse and the hotel that stood at 101 N. Main St., but are positioned so that viewers look through to the appropriate locations.

It's truly well done.

Although completing the research and securing financing have both been challenging, all those who have contributed to the exhibit program can take pride in having delivered a project that's as delightful as it is valuable.
