My research interests fall within two broad areas: (1) the history of life, and (2) the stratigraphic architecture of sedimentary basins. Research efforts regarding the former are currently focused on exploring the evolutionary history and paleobiology of marine plants through: (1) library/museum-based data collection, and (2) field collection (summer field work). Research in stratigraphy focuses on the early Paleozoic sedimentary rock sequences of the Appalachian and Michigan basins and incorporates data from surface exposures (mostly quarries), cores, and well logs. Ample opportunities for undergraduate research exist in both project areas. My teaching emphasizes hands-on activities, and I am currently involved in projects ranging from the local to the national level that aim to enhance student learning in the sciences. |
