Though
his primary training was in both economic and physical geography,
since the mid-1980's Carl has concentrated for the most
part on the physical side. He is currently the only regular
faculty member at EMU with teaching and research interests
in weather, climatology, and severe/unusual weather. His
teaching responsibilities in a given semester usually involve
some combination of an introductory level course in earth
science (EESC 108) and higher level courses such as weather
(EESC 324), climatology (EESC 424), and/or severe and unusual
weather (EESC 425).
His
research, in recent years concentrated on severe weather
and climate change, has employed computer analysis of synoptic
data. Recently he has become involved with GIS techniques
such as ArcView in his projects. Using this technology he
analyzed the impact of El Nino on the state of Michigan.
Carl
is a member of several professional organizations, primary
among which are the Association of American Geographers,
the Michigan Academy of Science, the American Meteorological
Society (SE Michigan Chapter), and the National Lightning
Safety Group. In addition, since 1986 he has maintained
the National Weather Service Cooperative Weather Station
located on university grounds.
Carl's
current recreational interests, which were much more competition-oriented
in years past, are primarily jogging and some weight training.
He has been married for more than 35 years to Ginny, and
they currently live in the Ann Arbor area. Their son and
daughter, Eric and Kristin, live out-of-state.
