THE JOY OF TEACHING

"Teaching for me is a hobby. It is a lot of fun. I like the interaction. You can learn from students who have interesting lives and jobs."

To me the joy of teaching is helping a student learn and watching that student grow in the knowledge of geography or the subject matter. It is satisfying to me to watch students go from a state where they have little or no knowledge of geography to a condition where they can confidently discuss the subject matter. That is the joy of teaching for me. To know that in some little but significant way, I have helped someone develop academically is priceless to me. Specifically, knowing that I help to advance the knowledge of geography is very satisfying to me. At times, students approach me for recommendations because they are applying for advanced degrees. I am glad I have been able to help a few students in that regard and it makes me glad that those students are advancing in their studies and in their lives.

"Teaching keeps me young. I love it."
