Undergraduate students in the geography program develop an awareness of the natural and cultural landscapes of several regions of the world and investigate the processes that form them. Lower-division courses are open to any student at the university, with few prerequisites. For students transferring to the university in their third year, preparation in introductory college geography courses is desirable.
An undergraduate major in geography follows a broadly based general degree program or one that emphasizes environmental studies. Both degrees may be fine-tuned towards prospective teachers.
Need help in finding out what classes are required for a Geography major?
Students who are considering an undergraduate major in Geography are invited to consult with faculty advisors (above) to discuss the specifics of their undergraduate program. The degree requirements and course offerings pages are helpful in planning a program of study.
How do I become a Geography major?
Declaring a geography major is easy. Please go to the Declaration of major form.
Geography Majors
There are two geography majors at EMU. One is a straight geography degree which includes the study of physical landscapes, their origins and the processes that alter them; the imprint of human activity on the Earth's surface; the complex relationships among places; and the application of technology to human resource identification, conservation and management.
The other Geography major is for Secondary Teacher Certification. This qualifies students for the Michigan Department of Education Secondary Provisional Certificate endorsed in geography.
